Is it wrong to pick on those weaker than yourself?

I mean these are your friends! And if they can't do the problem, is it wrong if I/we harass them hard for their obvious weakness? I just don't see it. In the game of climbing, especially bouldering, step up or get stepped on.

Me and a buddy were looking at a boldering problem and neither one of us could do it. I had never aid climbed before so I decided to aid the thing. A couple slings and a couple cams and I was soon at the top. He was sitting there laughing his ass off at me. We can always pick on each other, but I have a problem when someone makes fun of someone who isn't as talented or skilled or..... whatever.

If someone does something stupid then laugh and give them some shit, but you better also tell them a better way of doing it or encourage them. Because if you don't you are just being a jerk.

So I guess my answer to the OP is harass them, but every once in a while encourage them also.

Climbing is a game?

Maybe pebble wrestling at Stoney Point is a game.

A little good natured ribbing over beers is cool but just don't go too far. Surely somebody's better than you!

To your friends, it's OK.

To strangers, you had better watch out, what you say.

There is nothing like yelling up to someone, "Hey Susie, pull up your skirt and pull that move". They usually laugh and fall at that point. Then I try and fail with just as much style. As long as your friends and it's playful there are no worries. Can be taken to far depending on the person.

It is mean if it bothers the person. A little fun builds character. To much builds enemys.

Harassment and encouragement from your buddies go hand in hand while climbing.

I'm a pussy, I don't like to fall. The leader must not fall. Unless of course your sport climbing, then you can take those 3 foot whippers.

PUSSY!

"There are but three true sports--bullfighting, mountain climbing, and motor-racing. The rest are merely games" Barnaby Conrad

Wasn't that Hemingway?

Yeah, if it were a martini quote, then yes, Conrad. But this quote is full Ernest...and I'm pretty sure it's:

“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games.”

Damn, I'm bringing my hooks and aiders next time I go bouldering....hahahahahahaha!
