Oh, yeah, I forgot. You should try to get to the Cascades Rain Festival.

It begins every year on Jan 1st and goes until Dec 31st.

Bring rain gear.

I only wish that more would think and do (move to) as did the OPist.

Then I would have the entire Range of Light all to myself and my good close friends Norman, Brutus and Jack whom are always with me everywhere I go in them Eastern Sierra.

Off I go to share with some foreigners, the special Light and Spirits which only shine and frolic high up in these hills...

I grew up in the PacNW, but gotta say I side with the Chief on this one.

When you find that connection, It doesn't matter where you are. For me my connection with the North Cascades is all the more deep because I grew up among the glaciers and fields of heather. All of my "firsts" happened in the North Cascades. I have been to other beautiful places, but nothing touches my soul like my home range, nothing. That's the beauty of it. It's about the individual connection that YOU make with your environment. Some people find heaven in the Cascades, some the Sierra. In the end I just hope people find that connection. The rest is moot.

My move to the Pacific Northwest was because the State of California is broke, not because I chose to. I would wish that no one would have to leave their family and friends behind so that one man can plant a flag in his backyard and call the range his to enjoy alone.

If I had it my way, I would be back in Reno, next to the lovely Lake Tahoe and within eminent striking distance of the Eastside- even with its hordes of Bay Area desk jockeys (credit: WML), backwards laws and strange, self-entitled population (I would bag on the drivers, but Reno is no better).

I've scaled the walls of Yosemite, squelched inner demons in theTetons, fought grade creep in Joshua, pulled on alligator scales at Red Rock, dislodged rock missles in the Palisades, nearly sunk my car in the red mud of Indian Creek, sat and stared dismally at lofty peaks in the Andes, got lost in wintery tree-prison approaches to Cascade Volcanoes, climbed local favorites on the Front Range, hitchiked my way around the Western Slope to climb ice in Ouray, waded through ticks and poison ivy in NorCal, backpacked in the Sawtooth and dropped my favorite flask in the dark learning to climb at Donner.

The Cascades have given me the chance to spread my wings in ways that I couldn't within the Sierra- or anywhere else for that matter. For that reason, I posted the question- opinion based entirely. I came up here with a closed mind to what I would encounter and had my perception blasted away.

Maybe I'm not the only one with a closed mind out there who needs to check this stuff out...

It is like going to your favorite mono mart and complaining about tourons (but hey! you are one of them, If you can never get away!). I do not have this problem encountering desk jockeys, maybe because I like remote outings. But when I do encounter them, I do not look down on people.
I am sure fossana and chief do not have trouble getting away from the crowds.

One thing is for sure; neither of them compare to Florida or Texas.

Young woman, I was BORN in the Pac NW, AND I side both with the Chief and EVERYBODY lucky enough to enjoy the MTNS of the Western United States !!!

I think people just want to enthuse about their favorite mountains, y'know? How about this...live out by the Chief, but head north to Cascadia from mid-July until mid-September. Now THAT would be cool.

And, you could head down (over) to Arizona sometime during the Winter.

But, I'm not telling folks where to go or how to get there ..

Actually, I think I will just stay right here Mike.

in the cascades, its seems as though you always have to hike straight up a huge hill, sans trail, in jungle conditions, just to get to the good stuff. oh, how i hate hiking... but it sure does eliminate the riff raff. and i like that a lot!!! but the sierra, oh how i love my sierra...

The Sierras don't offer enough.

In the Cascades, you can get into all sorts of trouble/fun. Mixed, hard rock, easy rock, Ice, Tons of Alpine Ice...

Don't get me wrong, the Sierras are great/wonderful/spiritual whatever... It's just not the whole package.
