P.S.: One of these days I might get around to upgrading to a new computer. My
grandkids keep hitting me with, "This computer of yours doesn't even have
a flat screen grandpa, and nobody uses AOL dial up any more. When are
you going to get a new one and high speed internet!

I'm a fatdad too, and very glad to be one. The mountains will always be an important wonderful playground, but the kids and wife are the warm center of my world and the best thing that could happen to me.

(edited for verbosity). I climb a lot of great stuff but if I spent more than a thousand bucks on a summertime trip my wife would kill me.

Wow, sounds like something you'd say at the start of a support group.

I think Kevin nailed it. Be single, save money and quit at the appropriate time with your plans in place. My problem with that is when I've been in that situation, some aspect of the plan--partner, wrong season, injury--has fallen apart. Good thing the Sierra/Yosemite is so close. They've been my go to back up when grander aspirations fail.

We're lucky living in North America. We have tons of good rock and beautiful mountain ranges. I just spent a week in the Winds and I say Patagonia has nothing on Wyoming. I sat for two weeks in Chalten in the rain two winters ago. I did almost thirty pitches of awesome granite alpine rock climbing in four days in the Winds. Sure the Himalaya are alluring, but if you don't have the dough for airfare then do an expedition to the Vowells in B.C. or the Pickets in Washington. Plenty of remote adventure at a reasonable cost.

I started my climbing way back in 1954 in Tacoma, WA. Joined the Moountaineers and took their Basic and Advanced Climbing Courses. My close friend Harry Irwin and I really got hooked on climbing when at 16 we spent a week climbing all the peaks in the Sawtooth Range of the Olympics. We bagged one first ascent and several second and thirds. Fred Becky and his brother had snagged all the 1sts in l948.
While a student at Olympic College in Bremerton I worked with Mountain Rescue and was President of the Backpacking-Climbing Club on campus
My buddy and I climbed all over the Olympics, North Cascades, and the volcanoes until our days at the U of W finished and Uncle Sam demaned our eight years of service during the 1960's Draft Period.
When i came to Californi for Grad School I started climbing, river running, and xc backpacking in the Sierras and Trinity Alps. Ran student backpacking trips in the Sierras in the summer for a few years and have made ventures to Wyoming and Montana for trips to places like the Mission Range.
Never was able to put together the time or money to get off to South America, Asia, New Zealand, or Europe. At age 50 my long time climbing friend went out for his three mile morning run and died of a heart attack. That put an end to my serious climbing. Taught many student and my son to climb, but don't do any serious climbing at age 72.
Enjoy doing the easy stuff and getting out in the backcountry on solo backpacks and canoe trips.
Am amazed at what you young climbers achieve in the climbing world. Take advantage of the time you have. There will come a time when your health will limit what you can achieve!
Happy Climbing!

Just returned home from Pakistan this week. I must admit I told my employer that I would be taking 4-6 weeks in pakistan and that kind of turned into 3 months. Now they are not returning my emails.

Oh well.

The last time I went on an expedition I sold my car to finance the trip.
