Just returned from a trip to the Northeast, where I had a great time summiting Mansfield, Washington, Katahdin, and Marcy. I also spent a day on the Freedom Trail in Boston. Having never been to Boston, VT, NH, or ME, this was a pretty awesome trip for me. I've now been to 44 highpoints, but will probably only visit one or two per year from now on to allow time for some off-list climbing. Looking forward to Hawaii and the Northwest.

Hi Redwic, maybe we can coordinate and do Granite together, I went in this year and turned back on SW colouir due to loose rocks and not mentally prepared, I had PERFECT weather for 3 days though.

Made the most of my three day weekend and went to Minnesota. Hiked up Eagle Mtn today for my 45th highpoint. Hopefully I will have a bigger year next year.

I'm working on the state highpoints as I get to them. As a hiker, I like to see and experience difirent places, that's how I got into the state highpoint thing. I like the adventure and going places and seeing things I otherwise never would have. For example, the wild ponies in Virginia, definitely cool, especially if they wake you up in the middle of the night! It's not for everyone, but for me it's fun, and that's what matters really, enjoying something in life. Have fun and have some good adventures!

revisiting Spruce Knob and Mt. Davis this weekend on my way to Nelson Rocks Via Ferrata, I'm working hard to get some of my friends hooked on highpointing, I think I have re-visited 15 highpoints so far.

I think my highpoint repeats are Katahdin (14), Marcy (5), Washington (4), High Point NJ (3), Mansfield (2), Mitchell (2), Clingman's Dome (2). Of course that doesn't count the number of times I've driven by the Ebright Azimuth on my way to the Farmer's Market.

SM, enjoy your trip to Boundary Peak in two weeks but please be careful! End of October at 13K feet can either be a nice fall day or full winter conditions. Dress and gear appropriately!

I started climbing when I was 19 and made it a full time pursuit until marriage, kids and a career sidetracked me for a couple of decades. I climbed through-out those years but much less often mostly by choice. Just prior to my 50th birthday me and a couple of lifelong buds started talking about a trip to Whitney to see if we could still "get it up" and not drop over dead from some hidden health aliment that developed while spending a couple of decades in a "cube". We did a one day round trip (22 mi) to the summit via the trail and all came back none-the-worse so I was inspired (by boredom in the cube) to look at other state highpoints that I overlooked while climbing in my youth. State highpoints give one the opportunity to see the unique geology across this beautiful country and anything beats a week in the office. Since I live in the west and am kind of a spoiled, mountain snob (my own private Idaho) my objective was all of the western highpoints with the exception of Denali. I will substitute Hawaii at this point in my life, thank you. I spent many freezin' ass cold winters searching for and climbing frozen water and have two less toenails to clip as a result. I got snowed on in July this year and while it only lasted 15 minutes, it reminded me why I am a NOAA geek who won't step out the door if the chance of precip exceeds 10%. I live in Idaho where we can get 30-90 days of good weather in the summer and cotton is still a good choice when it goes over 100 and the humidity is 8%. At any rate, I'll be 60 next year and I still have a couple of easy "westerners" to keep me going for a few more years. Here's a link to 6 of our trips.

Bob, you inspired me with your Granite SW trip report, one of the very first circling on the internet! It looked easy in your report and in real life this August it's steep and exposed for me I'll be back again next year!

Let's give ourselves a couple weeks to get things together. I am open to any kind of gathering. We could 1) meet in the Philly/Wilmington area one evening, 2) congregate someplace for a dayhike, or 3) camp out. For 2 or 3 it might be fun to climb Hawk Mountain/the Pinnacle, as it is the closest thing in the area that resembles a real mountain! The Pinnacle is supposed to have the best views in Pennsylvania (I know that's not saying a whole lot..)

What do you guys think? Maybe the second or third weekend of October? We could catch the fall colors at their peak...

GEM, want to make the commitment for 10/14 at Hawk Mtn. or the Pinnacle? Pick a meet time and place and let us know. Sounds like you have at least three takers (SM0421, Hotoven, and me). Perhaps post in the Eastern forum as well? Sorry to push a response but the way my life is unless I get stuff on the calendar well in advance it usually winds up not happening.

Well, since nothing was set in stone, I made other plans for this Sunday. I'll start a thread in the Eastern forum and figure out a date we can do a similar hike or meet up. I'll see you there fellow mid Atlantic patrons!
