They got a couple of feet of snow in the Smokies due to Sandy. The National Snow Analysis shows it has all melted but I have no "on the ground" insight. Probably get a better answer posting to the Eastern Forum.

about to embark on my first real highpointing trip 3 weeks from now ... departing from DC to do PA > MD > WV in a 1.5 day trip ...

as for the ultimate goal, I'm not sure I'll end up going for all 50, but I do plan on bagging whatever peaks I can as I go thru life ...

two summers ago, I summited Granite Peak, which was definitely a challenge, and in summer 2014, I'm organizing an expedition with 3 other friends to go for Denali ... our first team training climb will be on Mount Washington this January ... hopefully the weather will be brutal to make everything a bit more difficult ...

really looking forward to all of this ...

I started HPing around '98 on Humphrey's and now about 15 years later I've finished about 30 including all the Western states and most of the hard ones (highest one I haven't climbed is Mitchell). Mainly because I've been climbing other things and living overseas.

Anyway, I'll be back in the US for at least a few weeks from late Dec thru January with some spare time and I'm anxious to make some headway on finishing the list. I also hiked about half of the AT before life took me West and to the Far East.

So I'm planning a trip to knock off between 5-10 HPs and at least 100 miles of the AT starting some time around January. Targeted HPs include: WV, MD, DE, NC, SC... maybe tack on the southern 6. Then hike all the WV and MD section on the AT and up in to PA for good measure.

Anybody out there like to join any of the fun?

Good luck Catamount! They say "third time is a charm". I keep on telling myself that about Rainier too!

Hi Everyone! I've been on a hiatus for a bit (Denali, then moved to Switzerland, then my son was born in September), but I'm back. Sorry I missed the east coast gathering, but I'm happy to host one here in Switzerland. :)

Regarding the Highpointer's Klub - I'm one of the officers, recently elected. I missed the last Kon because I was on Denali, but I'm planning to be at Maine. There's a lot of things that I'm trying to do with the club but as someone pointed out: everything is on a volunteer basis. If I don't have the time (new baby) then the things I want to make happen don't happen. Website updates, for example, would be welcome, but we are a small club, and not exactly rolling in funds. If we don't have a motivated volunteer to help make updates, then those might not happen for a while.

Our two big things - the newsletter and the Kons - are pretty well put together. We have energetic and talented people helping to make those things come together. Could things be improved, sure. Would we need help to improve them, absolutely. If anyone wants to give me feedback by pm instead of in a public forum, please do! I'll be happy to bring up ideas, thoughts, etc to the rest of the board and see what can be done.

Eric, welcome back. Good to hear from you after a long absence, and congratulations on your son. I hope Switzerland is treating you and your family well!

Catamount, thanks for your contributions to the page. Hey, this thread has 1218 responses..I think the second longest thread in SP!

My 2013 HP goals: TX, UT, IL, WI, MN, MI (will give me 37 if I am lucky enough to reach them all).

Bump. Didn't want this thread to disappear too far down into the forum. It's got such staying power :-) What do some other SHPers have for plans and goals this year?

I know early season can be a dangerous time in the mountains but i'll be attempting a solo expedition to Campbell and Hoosier Hill in 2 weeks.

Also in spring hopefully FL and TX. Then this summer something out west. Kings Peak has kinda caught my fancy and maybe combine that with Borah but we'll see.
