Do people really care?

What happens with the 2nd, 3rd and so on generation photos that get taken from sites and used again on another site and so on.

The way I see it you are chasing your own tail and there are far more important things in life to be concerned with.

That attitude is why a lot of things aren't as good as they could be. Why should we have to lock our doors? Why should we have to be careful what we leave in our cars? We should never condone illegal and unethical behavior at any time in any place for any reason. Otherwise you are doing nothing but helping the criminals get ahead. That same apathy is why the world is in the situation it is in today !

The web has made plagiarism is the new norm.

Moni I believe you are missing my point. Sure it is poor practice if others take things that you feel belong to you, however in this case, just who is going to police the issue. Just how far will the average person go to protect a picture if it has been poached to a site, then another site poaches it and so on. Who will police it? I am not being apathetic just dealing in reality. You post something on the web then it is available to all to manipulate in ways we may not like. You could waste a whole lot of your life pursuing the unseen on the web across many continents and to what lengths and expense?

I understand Janne chasing up copyright issues as it generates an income for him, I suspect there are not a lot on this site that make money chasing those who lift their pictures. And for the majority who can afford to have lawyers chasing these sorts of things up?

If you leave nice things on display whether that be on the web or in your car there will always be those tempted to take these nice things. So the question is, how do you lock up the www. You cant! Which police do you send, whom do you make a complaint to and so on?

Seems the average person is not really bothered with images used for other purposes, to me the main people concerned are those who have some sort of commercial interest in their photographs.

Any photos I put on the web I do so with full understanding that others may wish to use them and I personally have no objection to this.

Cheers Roger

Roger:
Fred has one of the most stolen images on the web. He makes no money off of his pictures and doesn't intend to, but is zealous about demanding that people ask for permission and give him credit or not use the picture. The enforcement starts with the user him or herself. If enough people don't care, then the abuse will only escalate. That's true with more than just pictures and more than "just the web".

I sent the website mentioned above an e-mail asking them to remove the photos until they obtain permission from the photographers to post them. We don't usually have time to get very involved in stolen photo issues, unfortunately, but this one seemed especially egregious. We'd also like them to stop doing this in the future. We'll see what happens!

Many thanks to Moni, who kindly translated my message into German.

as a journalist, I never print a photo without permission (gov't. photos are the exception, as they really are ours anyway) Others on staff have used photos without permission, only to be threatened with lawsuits, unless some other arrangements or compensation can be made (monetary or free advertising)
However, policing this is really the business of those who can afford it, unfortunately.
Personally, I enjoy the freedom and autonomy of the Internet but am afraid that it will only be a matter of time before some jerk (probably elected) will tell me and you what can and cannot be used or said on the web.
My stuff gets ripped off without cred and thrown around in derogitory contexts all the time, but i'm used to it and jaded enough to accept that people like to steal because they're lazy, even if they climb 1000 m of ice in an hour.
I'm not sure if this helps, but i thought i'd give my two cents.

Dave + Moni - Thanks.

Kai - weird. That's Ari Paulin. He's a member of SP and he's active.

Elves - If as in the case of Kai/Ari, I think you should somehow act on the former's behalf. At least ask Ari what the hell is going on.

I don't make any income with my photography, although I'd like to give it a go one of these days. As to my photos being taken and posted elsewhere on the internet, I'm not bothered. I might take it more as a complement even if I was not given credit. Perhaps it is a contradiction, but if any of my photos were taken and made into a print for generating income, then I would feel I was being robbed. I only post my photos with enough memory to make for a beauty on the internet, but print quality would be poor, a sort of built in protection in itself the way I see it.

peninsula, But how would you feel if someone took your photo, put their own copyright mark on it, then ignored your requests to have the photo removed?
For example:
http://www.oeav-events.at/service/bilde ... image3.htm

In this case I even contacted Corax's lawyer, who said he could get it removed, but it would cost me about $120 and I wouldn't get anything in return. In other words the guilty party gets away scot-free and I have to pay. Hardly seems fair or right, does it?

I would take action against these guys if there was some way that made sense.

Perhaps Dave could send the message he sent to the other Austrian site to this one as well. Maybe it will have more luck than I did. I'll PM him.

Thanks Moni, Yes, that is worth a try.

This thread prompted me to do a bit of searching and in less than 10 minutes I found over a dozen sites that had stolen the same photo. None have given me credit, but at least they didn't put their own copyright directly on it (though some do copyright the page). Many are in eastern Europe, and Nepalese trekking agencies seem to like it.

Maybe contacting tech provider, rather then domain owner?
