Fleetwood Mac's self-titled "Fleetwood Mac" has a number of mountain themes...

but especially "Crystal"

(& "Warm Ways" & "Landslide")

Not "get pumped up" music, but Perfect for the drive in or the drive out!

--------------------
p.s. throw Pink Floyd's "Fearless" from Meddle in there too

I like music that keeps me moving quickly:

Soilwork, Hatebreed, Madball, Full Blown Chaos, Fear Factory, Slayer, (OLD Metallica), Static X, old Lamb of God and Shadows Fall just to name a few... Once on a summit, I'll turn off the iPod, or switch over to some Rush.

Pat Metheny Group-"First Circle" (the deepest album ever imo), selected tracks on "Travels" ("Goodbye", "The Fields The Sky", etc.), "New Chataqua". And then some John Denver and bluegrass, always.

This song was written expressly for climbers and our ilk: "The Climb"

I can almost see it
That dream I am dreaming
But there's a voice inside my head saying
"You'll never reach it"

Every step I'm taking
Every move I make feels
Lost with no direction
My faith is shaking

But I gotta keep trying
Gotta keep my head held high

There's always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be a uphill battle
Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose

Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb

I don't bring music with me, but somehow it just pops into my head.

A lot of it has to do with the rhythm of my hiking and something will automatically show up to match it. Sometimes it's a chorus from a song, sometimes it's something absolutely ridiculous that I make up.

I guess I prefer not to have the earbuds in my ears but want to be open to whatever shows up.

Kumbaya, I know.

There are other good reasons, too. Imagine getting hit by rockfall because you're too busy jamming out to whatever tune is blaring on your Ipod!

A good song about climbing is called "South Side of the Sky" by Yes. I'm also into Tool a lot, Led Zeppelin, and Jane's Addiction after a climb.

Please don't try to "pigeon-hole" me, but everybody knows I'm heavily into classic rock.

I've been known to listen to everything from
Carly Simon to Ozzy Osborne.

Another classic by 'Yes' is "Siberian Khatru" from
the "Close To The Edge" CD, which is entirely
about mountains.

ELP and Rush round out my top 5.

How about: In high places by Mike Oldfield.

Italian Dialect Music

Having spent some of my happiest times in the Italian alps, I like the "Italian Folk/Rock" artist Davide Van De Sfroos, who sings in dialect about the mountains and life in general. Songs: "La Balera", "La Furmiga", "La Curiera", "Ninna Nanna del contrabbandiere" (song of the mountain smugglers more or less), or for those beautiful alpine mornings "Akuaduulza".

Fairport Convention, "Meet on the ledge". I´m not sure if it´s really about mountaineering but it reminds me of it.
