Perhaps Mel was a fictional character

Yes, that's correct. Mel isn't a real person. It was a publicity stunt by a gear manufacturer and meant to be funny. If you go back and read through the thread, you can see who (eventually) got it and who didn't (it took most of us a little while to figure out; Biglost gave it away, but his post doesn't exist anymore). Most of the post in this thread were actually posted in jest. Some were even in on it.

If you read the thread with all this in mind, it might give you a different perspective and maybe even give you a few laughs. I wasn't sure if you knew the story or not, thus my comment.

Anyway, here is another similar stunt, same time period:

After clicking on "English", check out the slogan on the right:

I think most of knew that it was a gag (and went along with it and enjoyed it), but many (including myself) did not know it was perpetrated by a gear manufacturer (one who definitely had a sense of humor).

Every annoying comment I've ever made was also a troll. Boy, I sure had you guys going!

For Mel's sake and all other newcomers who aim high and have deep pockets I refuse to accept this was a troll or publicity stunt for a sperm bank in North Korea. The more people who say otherwise are accomplishing nothing more than uncloaking the conspiracy.

I have to believe that Mel will some day join the pantheon that includes Hillary, Bonnati, Messner and all the other greats. He sounds like just that type of guy--a bundle of unfettered testosterone ready to be unleashed. He has already conquered Mammoth Mountain so we know he is serious. I'm rooting for Mel. A pox on all the skeptics.

I'll say no thanks to the sarcasm young friend. In the first week of May we climbed Mammoth Mountain as one of my short term goals before the big one. FYI Mammoth is over 12,000 feet.

Wow....wish I had seen this thread before.....fricken fine comedy! Over 12k......snicker..... Troll or not, I let myself believe he's for real so it's that much funnier.
