Don't forget that the points earned during SP1 are worth 2x the points earned during SP2 at REI. :wink:

Plenty of rumours about this going on in the past. I just found a way to more the less calculate this. Might be interesting.

Summitpost is currently the 51,752 biggest website in the world. The domain receives about 7,604 unique visitors and 43,343 (5.7 per visitor) page views per day. Based on this information, you can estimate that it earns about $23 USD per day and gives the site an overall value of $16,653 USD.

========================================================

Chief, this has been discussed at length before. Lots of speculation going on too. I managed to calculate these numbers and decided to share them. They are still an estimate, but should hopefully stop some of the speculation. As Gobriango said, I too would love to buy the site for that amount of money. Not because I think it is worth it right now, but because there is a huge potential.

========================================================
I've been talking about this a month ago, my estimated value was 52.000 dollar.

I even contacted the owners if they would sell this place. I really was thinking and still believe some parts in the code has to change ...

I think it is for the money they would do this. If they wouldn't and really would do it for the mountains and people they would have changed this code 2 ---- years ago!

This coming from two people whom have contributed absolutely nothing at all that is of value to this website? :? :?:

I see people don't know jack about how much a website makes or it's actual value on the market. This site makes good money for somebody and I hope it continues to do so for years to come. Maybe we should discuss just how much money this site makes us individually. Summitpost has saved me the cost of 2-3 books per year. Summitpost saves me from purchasing 20-30 maps per year. Summitpost saves me from having to find access to at least 40 peaks per year. That's the gas and wear and tear on my truck. Summitpost saves me from the time and effort researching peaks and routes that have already been posted. Maybe you need to be a pre-internet climber to understand these concepts?

So, from how I see it, Summitpost has cost me nothing but saves me hundreds of dollars a year. Should I care that someone is getting bank from this service to me? No. Should I admire the genius of a website where volunteers do all the work yet the creator gets the cash? Whomever the creator is, I salute you and wish you more good fortune.

But what about the time Summitpost has COST you pigfighting on these forums? You're going to have to add that to your spreadsheet.

Yes, but think of the amusement value of that! You can't get that on cable TV or at the movies, and what would it cost you if you could? :lol: :lol: :lol:

We don't all have the luxury of living near the mountains or being able to climb full-time. I'm sharing as much as I can, if you would've bothered to look, you would've seen that.

Both of them are willing to offer some coding for the website because they don't have the chances to go to the mountains that much ...

And yet you want to run one of the biggest mountaineering websites in the world.

I'm sharing as much as I can, if you would've bothered to look, you would've seen that.

Wow! Two whole trip reports and one album (to already well known mountains where no more information is needed anyway).

I have an idea. Why don’t you both start your own website on something you actually do? Oh, and by the way, SP would be much better without you two. Don’t let the door hit your butt on the way out.

I don't find this site to be of much use for beta.

Then why are you here? Oh yeah, to troll, complain and contribute nothing.

SP has plenty of good/high quality beta. Much of the information here can be found no where else.

I agree here as well. I've found easy beta to obscure places, even on my cell phone browser. Its pretty cool!

Doesn't need to catalog everything everywhere, but I personally have profited by the contributions to this site.

Cheers

Agreed. And I'd wager that just about every member who isn't in the forums likely agrees too (I used this site for several years before even signing up- I finally joined one day because one page was so helpful I wanted to give it a vote).
