What happens when positions like that are the entry level, and the rangers who come up through an urban LEO background eventually end up in responsible positions in parks like Yellowstone?

Posted: Tue Aug 24, 2010 4:10 pmI was just reading this article and came over here to post. As a kid and teen this was my dream job. Turns out in many cases you're a cop with a hat. Still, it's nice to hear more young people will be getting involved in the NPS.

Thanks for the link, Alpinist! I'm actually applying in a few days and (hopefully) starting next week as a volunteer in Rocky Mountain National Park working maintenance which, hopefully I can revolve into employment in a year or so before the move to Alaska.

But in times of high unemployment still an option, if you are young, and looking to advance from being a hall monitor to something more permanent in the irritate the general public industry.

Posted: Wed Aug 25, 2010 12:17 amA buddy of mine went to ranger school after he graduated UMass, and he's working his third summer for the NPS now, doing enforcement. If you have a seasonal job then you have to apply for a new job every season, while working a different job in the off season.
My buddy did USS Constitution one year, Gateway NRA in NJ the next summer, and is now working Independence in Philly this summer, which might be a year round gig. I often tell him to go out west (hell, I'd be happy working some obscure National Monument in Nevada or something), but he's happy staying in the Northeast though, since he wants to stay close to home.
