I was in the pub last night discussing climbing with some non climbers when I got asked 'when does hill and mountain walking become mountaineering?' Then I realised I really didn't know and the magazines and internet stuff I read defines mountaineering in all sorts of ways. So my dumb ass question is when for you does it become mountaineering? X x thank youuu

It's "mountaineering" when you want to brag about whatever you did.

I call everything hiking.

Sometimes I call everything climbing.
What is alpine?

Melancholy is a dog that eats cantaloupes.

23 pages, one banning and a lot of upset feelings?

It's like beachtaineering.

You pack a lunch, dress up propertly, buy the proper safety equipment and try not to drown while you're down there.

She can't.
It might be fun, you know.

Mountaineering, that's what you do on a mountain.
Climb, hike.
To me, the image I see in my mind is being on bigger mountain, with snow on top and wild environments.

I think you meant "Happy mountaineering people!" ;)

Different approach - when can you call yourself a mountaineer? Mountaineering covers a range of mountain "activities" and I think in order to call yourself a mountaineer you should be skilled in all of them; Including hiking, rock, snow, and ice climbing, glacier travel, as well as camping, meteorology, assessing snow conditions (re avalanches), first aid and rescue skills, etc. Mountaineering is not an activity in itself.
