I'll 2nd the motion to get a Freshette. I've been using one for about a year now, and it makes things so much faster and easier. Plus, I don't have to mess around with my harness when rock climbing and risk not having everything back in place for safety after I do my thing.

:P Hey, Emmie, are you a city girl? ;) Honestly, I have been hiking, camping, shooting, climbing, paddling...whatever, in the great outdoors since I was an infant and just do not find this to be so much of a problem. If in "mixed company," we'll pracice the "skirts up, pants down" approach common to the paddling world (that is, women upstream / uphill and men downstream / downhill).

Two conditions, in particular, complicate matters for all of us (boys and girls): extreme cold and wearing a harness. Yeah...only guys with the most compact plumbing systems do NOT have challenges in a harness.

When you're in the mountains...forget about being a lady and just get 'er done. Everyone's seen a full moon shining in the woods - life happens. :)

Good luck!

Thanks Sara, I've never thought of it that way before. It's true what they say, there is an up side in everything. :)

Sorry this topic reminds me of something from when I was younger. We grew up out in the country and even when we moved in town we spent alot of time at my grandparents which is in the woods. Well little kids don't always want to go in the house to pee when they're busy playing so my grandmother told us we could just pee outside. Well not long after we moved in town my mom was downstairs in our apartment and the landlord came down (which good for us was a friend of ours) and said to my mom "Uh, your little girl is peeing in my driveway". Turns out my sister had to pee and thought grandmothers instructions fit our new place too. Oh well, she was only maybe 3-4 so it was cute and funny then.... probably not so much if she did it now....

I have a jinx trying to post to this thread.

Actually, to follow up on DavNdave's suggestion, in a serious vein:

Consider taking a silnylon poncho; it's very loose, and covers a person quite well in the squatting position. Some women used them on glacier routes in mixed company.

It is amazing how fast urine degrades in the top few cm of soil, as long as the soil is fairly well aerated.

My wife has tried two different devices for urinating while standing up wearing a harness. Her biggest complaint was that it's too difficult to keep them clean on big trips. She's decided it's just easier to lean up against a rock or squat down and go, regardless of who is around.
