Hey all. I recently watched the film 180 Degrees South and really liked it. I was just curious if anyone knew of any good climbing/outdoor-oriented films, other than the new one out (127 Hours). Thanks guys. Happy Holidays and even happier trails!

One short film I saw in probably 6th grade was "To Build a Fire" which was a Jack London story, I believe. It is an outdoor survival film. I think I saw the 1969 version, but upon searching the internet, it appears there is a 2003 version, too.

When I grew up in Germany, there were lots of documentaries by Reinhold Messner about his adventures. All of them were brilliant, but my favorite was one about the Ruwenzories. That one got me absolutely hooked!
There were also documentaries by Heinrich Harrer that were very good. Unfortunately, I have never seen any of those in the US, but they are all worth watching if you can get them.

Saw that also many years ago and found it excellent, 75 degrees below zero is pretty damn cold! I would add K2 to Joe's list. Don't recall seeing Alone in the Wilderness, I'll have to check it out.

Probably my favorite climbing movie:

It was never extremely well known though and seems to becoming harder to get.

Are we really calling this an outdoor movie --- or perhaps the longest Patagonia commercial ever made??? :? I keep thinking of Yvon Chounard as the captain of the Starship Enterprise - "I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am..."

(don't mean to derail this... )

To The Limit is on Netflix. It is about the Huber brothers trying to break the speed record on the Nose, a hanging out a bit in Germany, and an expedition in Patagonia. Pretty good movie, mostly in German.

Touching The Void is also on Netflix. Needs no introduction.

180 Degrees South is too.

Any others on Netflix? I must've forgotten a few.

It is a shame that White Water Summer is always forgotten in these conversations. I loved this movie when I was a kid.

I saw an old movie. From the gear, it appeared to be 1980's vintage.

It was a documentary type movie, about 15-20 minutes long, similar to "Solo."

It's a guy, climbing solo, with skis on his back. Looks a lot like the Tetons. Pounding pitons, etc.

Finally, he reaches the top, then puts on his skis, and heads down a couloir. Falls once, the gets up and skis some more.

Anyone recognize this? Know the name? Ring any bells?
