so all you got to do to get a mountain named after you is: get control of one of the strongest countreys in the world thus weelding your political cloute on a small mountainess nation.
the only other way i can think of achiving mountain naming status involves dying in some horific way, but that will only get you a small cliff or hill in the middle of "no body cares ville".

Obviously, I must not know my USSR/Kyrgyzstan history (or current events, for that matter) very well, but what is the Kyrgyz fetish with naming mountains for Russian leaders? The Lenin refernce is at least understandable, but Yeltsin and Putin?

Since Kyrgyzstan was a Socialist Soviet Republic, i.e., part of the USSR, until 1991, I'd wager that it was Moscow, and not actually the Kyrgyis that named Peak Lenin. I guess now they have some serious ass-kissing to do.

It's unlikely Putin had anything to do with it. More likely a bid by Kygyzstan to get more russian tourist/climbers to visit and spend money in their country. Kinda like Mexico naming a volcano after Reagan or Obama or Justin Bieber.

Well Bob, how about naming a peak in a foreign country after your expedition sponsor?

This was the case at: http://www.summitpost.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=50072

This story is not dead. It stunk too much to stay buried.

If you're going to murder the truth, don't erect a neon sign over the shallow grave.

More to come ...

My uncle flew survey flights in the Air Force over Antarctica back before I was even born. They named a peak after him, which is a cool little bit of family history now that climbing peaks and such is a part of what I like to do.

When I worked briefly for a company in Denver, I met a very neat woman who also was in the Air Force. And you guessed it, she had a peak named after her as well! We put push pins where the peaks were in a map on our cubicles. Ha ha ha.
