I'm sure some (a lot) of you have seen this, a movie I saw what seems like moons ago fits well in this community.

It's called; Baraka, which means blessing apparently. The movie was shot in the early 90's on 70mm film, before HD and contains no words, sound and music only. Don't let this scare you off, it's absolutely stunning.

More commonly baraka means: luck.


Same thing in most cultures. Blessing = luck = fortune = money.

Those of us who had to learn a few prayers in a Semitic language or two can confirm that the root meaning of "barakah" is "blessing". ("Blessed art thou, Lord ...": barukh ata, adonai)

From their names, I'm guessing the writers are/were French, in which case they'd be familiar with the same (Algerian) usage as Borut: it can mean "luck" too.

Yes, really great movie. We got to watch it as one of our films in film class (fine arts elective) in college. I got an A.
