So what if I myself have violated the sacred "General Forum" with some blunt truths? At any rate, now I'm going to add some more to my Off-Route thread that GH refers to, while he violated TOS in the process. I request that GH be permanently banned!

Sorry, Steve, but we're going to have to let Goldenhopper stay this time. You see, ever since he posted those pictures of himself in Off-Route, female membership has spiked and the elves' PM box has been flooded with requests for his email address. We might have to create his own special forum to enable him to chat with the ladies so that they'll leave the other forums, and us, alone. So you're just going to have to endure his taunts for now.

I knew it! Bob, you know I'm here to help in any way I can. Make check payable to G.D. Hopper.

And ladies remember just one at a time please. He just a man, he's just a man...

I object to these personal attacks! :D

Twoshuzz, oh forget it, the story would send this thread directly to the dark side...

Sarah! For the majority of us, even paddles become useless when we don't know how to use them.

Actually, Shakespeare wrote that. Or Edward de Vere, or Christopher Marlowe, or, some even claim, Queen Elizabeth I.

Walk-ups are not climbing; that's called hiking, or 2nd-class, right? Many people have told me they've "climbed" Mt. Whitney, so I ask them if they did the East Face or E. Buttress; and they tell me they walked up the trail.

For what little it may be worth, I agree. Once I'm using my hands for holds, it's climbing. Until that, it's hiking. However, if I'm off-trail and finding my own way up a mountain, I call that mountaineering even if the difficulty never exceeds Class 2.

But it's all semantics. By a dictionary definition, going up a Class 1 route to a summit is climbing.

If you'd rather be in the mountains than at the mall, that's a good start.

Of course who you "ignore" is your business. I choose to ignore all climbers born after 1970! Wimps!--

Whew! I barely made the Steve1215 cutoff! :D

How many times do your hands have to touch the rock to make it 3rd class?

Plus, the SP consensus has always been (wrongly IMHO) that "exposure" defines 4th class. So here's a 4th class walk-up at the crux:

Interesting question. Many times, I have been on a Class 3 route and barely touched the rock at all with my hands. But I have seen others clinging as if their very lives depended on it.

No easy answer, and yet another can of worms. When I write a route description, though, I tend not to call the route Class 3 unless there is a sustained pitch of it that can't be easily bypassed or unless there are several sections of short Class 3 pitches. Otherwise, I'll refer to it as a hike with the possibility of an occasional Class 3 move.

I agree with this. I've always thought of class 3 as full time use of hands and class 4 as the same or a little harder with the addition of all but certain death exposure.

I've avoided class 4 for many years (unless it's a short move), but when I was a kid to mid-twenties I was quite stupid.

I've done some sport climbing too, but found it boooooring!
