i love stuff like survivorman, discovery channel, etc... and movies about survival, the mountains, etc. I've got a group of young-ins at my store that i'm trying to motivate to get off their butts. obviously one way to do that is to organize trips and such and we're doing that, but i was wondering if there are any movies or shows that get you guys really amped up to get outdoors? a few that i've appreciated:

shows:
man vs wild (its silly but i still like it)
survivorman
dual survival
everest beyond the limit
out of the wild

movies:
the northface
the most recent bourne movie

what else gets you guys going? and please dont say "cliffhanger" cuz well, yeah.

I like Survivorman and Dual Survival, but they tend to get shown in marathons of multiple episodes together that motivate me to sit on my butt and watch for too long, until I get irritated with the way I am spending time and turn off the TV. Also, my version of fun suffering differs from theirs in that I like really long dayhikes rather than multiple day survival situations.
Wild Justice gets me excited to get outside because they go to most of the same places around California that I tend to go or where I have spent a lot of time.

Movies that tend to get me motivated to get out and exercise are usually about athletes in specific sports like cycling or running. For example, I found this inspiring growing up:

More recently, I enjoyed 127 Hours, but not so much as motivation to get out there.

Sometimes watching an outdoor sport that I like on tv gets me excited to get out and work at it more myself.

Finding ways to promote frequent (almost daily) group exercise or sport opportunities is probably more important than inspirational movies and tv.

A bit dated, a bit cheesy, but you can't beat White Water Summer (yes, those are the Sierra Buttes!):

The North Face, while a great movie, is ultimately kind of a bummer. Not sure if that would really get me psyched. I think Touching the Void is more inspiring, despite what the movie's about. The Eiger Sanction (again, some dicey portions) has great climbing sequences.

Probably the number one film that makes me want to get out a do something is Chariots of Fire. The opening music has been played so much it's almost cliche now, but the movie itself is absolutely beautiful and inspiring:

Another great film to psych you up for riding is Breaking Away. Classic.

Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.

If seeing those people doesn't motivate you to get into the wilderness and get some exercise, nothing will.

(PS just don't watch Deliverance before you do...)

^^^^While I was out cycling this morning, Breaking Away, Chariots of Fire, Touching the Void, and The Eiger Sanction crossed my mind. I somehow missed White Water Summer, but I did think of this cheesy 80's movie with tons of funny and exciting scenes, including lots of racing through Colorado National Monument, and Kevin Costner's mustache:

Perhaps the most harrowing climbing sequence ever committed to film:

My favorites were often about the Sierra Nevada- my home range.

A couple of 'old school' movies:

High Sierra (1941) with Humphrey Bogart and Ida Lupino (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033717/)

and

I Died a Thousand Times (1955) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048190/) -A remake of High Sierra with Jack Palance and Shelly Winters.

I used to enjoy freeze framing the scenes that showed historic shots of Lone Pine and Whitney Portal Rd. Some of the old buildings (such as the Dow Hotel) are still there today. It's also interesting to note that WPR was dirt in HS (1941) and paved by the time IDATT was filmed in 1955.

A real thrill for me was that the 1937 Plymouth Coupe that Bogart drove in HS is in the Lone Pine Film Museum (we visited last year). My wife probably found it difficult to understand why I was so jacked to see that car, but she didn't realize how many times I watched that very car being chased by cops up that dirt road to Whitney Portal during those dark winter months while waiting for the next climbing season to begin...
