‘The Climbers’ book - portraits of climbing legends

In mid-October, 2017 when my book is released it will be exactly that many years, almost to the day, since I took the first photograph (of Glen Dawson) for a portrait project that has since become much larger than I ever imagined.
It started in the 1990s, I simply wanted to photograph a few of the elder Sierra Nevada climbers, and I got them: Glen Dawson, Jules Eichorn, David Brower and others.
Then I photographed Bradford Washburn and from there it turned into an American project.
But then I got Riccardo Cassin and the trap door fell open and I’ve since gone literally around the world to photograph the greats, famous and not so much, that were active between the 1920s and 1970s.
Greg Child wrote an extensive essay, mostly historical, often personal, Homeric. Alex Honnold has written the foreword. I'm happy, lucky and proud to have them both involved.
In the preface I write about my travels and travails to hunt down, find and photograph these legends over the years, usually with a wallet no thicker than a Listerine Breath Strip.
Mountaineers Books is the publisher.

The photo attached is the spine and front cover. The book comes inside an embossed black linen slipcase. I finally saw the finished thing two days ago, the construction, printing and binding is amazing. They did a really great job on that end.
