Bummer. I remember going on SPS trips with him, and seeing him quite regularly on Mt. Baldy back in the1980's - early 1990s. If he wasn't in the Sierra Nevada on a weekend, he was probably hiking up Baldy. I've still got an old copy of his Mexican Volcanos book; he helped my friends and I quite a bit with planning a trip down there (successful on Izta, Popo, and Orizaba).

Also glad you posted this in the 'General' section rather than the California section, as he does get some recognition overseas for his books, too.

The article mentions a second head injury last year that led to his death. Anyone know any details regarding that?

The word on the street is that this stems from the accident on Mt. Baldy.

He was always a very private individual, after the accident he became a recluse.

From the article: In 2005, Secor suffered skull fractures and other injuries from a glissading accident on Mt. Baldy in Southern California. He regained most of his mobility but last year suffered a second head injury that ultimately led to his death, Colgrove said.

Sounds like something else happened in 2016.

Saw this on SP home page. Name rang a bell, where did I see this before? Went to check my library, there it is: "Mexico's Volcanoes: A Climbing guide", that I got in 1990. Used it for my first high altitude climb, up Orizaba in 1991. Approached via Coscomatepec, summited, and went back up a few days later to camp near the summit. A fantastic experience! Then bicycled to Tlachichuca to see Sr. Reyes, and chatted about RJ Secor. Many thanks RJ, for the inspiration, and great memories!
