Sorry if this is a duplicate--looking to lure husband to Tropic, Utah with me in September while I do 5 day endurance horseback competition. If he could improve his climbing skills while I ride, I think we could make a deal. Any recommendations on a school in southern Utah for rock climbing skills?

there is no climbing in Bryce Canyon Deb.....Capitol Reef has a lot of trouble to get into however....I don't know of a guide working that area, just not enough of objectives to warrant it...... of course tons of contacts in Moab and Zion....a bit warm this time of year as well.....good luck on your enduro comp, us horse husbands deserve a frigging award of some kind.........

I appreciate your input--thought it might be a long shot since no big population base right there. If you horse husbands ever form a union, us rider wives would have to renegotiate the treaty.

What photos! I visited Bryce as a kid with my parents, and those pics really stirred some memories. Thanks for posting, lcarreau.

Would he only have one day to do this? I don't know anything about horse endurance rides, so are you out for 5 days or do you come back each day and stay the night someplace?

Zion National Park is less than 2 hours from Bryce Canyon, and there are guiding services there. Zion Rock and Mountain Guides is the main one I believe, but Dow and others might know more about who is good. It's not a long drive though, and it's a pretty one....it could be done in a reasonable day for sure and he could still get some good climbing in. Of course, September is hot, but I'm sure they'll know some places to go where it would be cooler.

Kaylypso, Zion isn't that far away, but the climbing areas will be very hot.

I would highly recommend that you visit the cool slot canyons instead of trying to go rock climbing.

Bull Valley Gorge and Round Valley Draw are two good ones (non-technical) that are nearby and the shaded canyons will be farily cool in the summer. Some photos of some of the nearby slot canyons are below:

Escalante area is also nearby and has a lot of fantastic things to see in summer:





That time of year (unless it is late September), I would suggest going those places rather teh classic rock climbing routes in the desert. Many of the slots themselves are rock climbs (especially around Escalante), but the ones around Tropic aren't guided (as far as I know).
