Kings Peak - road conditions

Hi,

I'm planning a trip to the US from the UK next August (yest I know its planning in advance!!) If I came to try Kings Peak can anyone advise on the road conditions. I know most rental cars aren't supposed to be taken on dirt roads but I've got away with it before if I go slow and the road isn't too bad.

Anyone able to give a hint on what the roads would be like in late August / early September.

Thanks!

David

That's as fine of a dirt road as they come. The speed limit is 35 mph, but going 50 on it is not uncommon in stretches. The last 3 miles are not quite as good as the rest of it, but still fine for all cars.

I remember when I took the road several years ago, and had NO problem with my compact passenger car.

If you're coming in from Kamas, (where they have the fish hatchery), and the Mirror Lake Highway, the "roughest" stretch will probably be between Black's Fork and West Fork Smith's Fork.

(Excuse me, with ALL these FORKS, it's best to carry a SPOON along just in case!)

Anyway, I remember sleeping inside my car at the trailhead, AND the next morning I started up the trail in the direction of KINGS.

Best of luck ... 8)

Larry took the scenic route. I assumed you'd go via Henrys Fork which you get to via Mountain View Wyoming.

WHAT ??

I didn't know THAT was the scenic route. I was wondering WHY it took most of the day (to drive) between Kamas and China Meadows ..
