Hi

I will be in wendover for one day and would like to do a 1/2 day hike. My partner is pretty inexperienced and I have moderate experience. I am thinking volcano peak but am looking for other hikes as well

Also, anyone know of any cool ghost towns or small western town bars in that area of Nevada or Utah

Not sure what you call easy though, but it's not difficult.

When I lived in Tooele County, we used to refer to Wendover as "BEND-OVER ...." ... as you can easily be taken advantage of there.

You want to get into the hills SOUTH of Wendover.

If you have the time, Ibapah is only 64 miles away ..

Few people hike these mountains, mostly because they are so isolated. Ibapah is some 64 miles south of Wendover, along a paved road. It's located along the old Pony Express route and you can reach it by driving the road which follows the route west from old Camp Floyd, but that takes you over 130 miles of dirt road. (It's actually a fun, historic drive, with many scenic spots to explore — well worth doing.) The best way to get into the area is to come south from Wendover. You can also reach it out of Delta, through Trout Creek, but that's a long, rough drive. From the Las Vegas side, you can come up Highway 93 to Ely, then cut over to Ibapah.

I've only been up there a couple times. The main big peak is Pilot Mtn, but that's a huge all-day hike. Ibapah is also an all-day hike with over 5,000 feet of gain.

I'd do a search here on summitpost and (if possible) order the search to just Elko County. There are a lot of smaller desert ranges north and south of the interstate that can be done in a half-day, some combining old roads and possibly ghost towns. Look for reports by Dean.

If you have the time, some exploration of the salt plains is worth the time, as is driving down along the old Pony Express route, as Larry describes. The loneliness out there is quite remarkable.

I have to ask, and I mean this in a friendly way, but what circumstances would cause a person to have to be in Wendover? Not that it's a bad town. The nicest thing about it is the train station, followed by the bus station and the highways, if you catch my drift.

Yeah, in other words it's a TOURIST TRAP !

There's a nice little lake outside of Wendover, called Blue Lake. Do you want to get your line wet ???

The Silver Island Range is probably your place for half a day, and it's well-represented on SummitPost. It's beautiful and easy to access, though it might be pretty harsh in full sun. I'd go early in the morning or towards sunset, if possible.

Thanks for all of the replies and advice. I am flying into SLC for a conference (actually in the opposite direction in Park City) starting Sunday night and wanted to spend a day in the desert/mountains and also be a bit isolated (probably also do a hike in Park City on Sunday, so any thoughts on that would be great). Wendover seemed like the first civilized place heading west on 80. Not really into gambaling, but some night life would be nice. Also like out of the way places with cool bars, etc.

Just saying .... you'll probably be traveling in style, but be careful not to (initially) drive too far off the pavement.
