I thought I would spread a little holiday cheer to the SP computer system and free up a little disk space. I'd be embarassed to admit the number of old versions of my submittals (albums, articles, trip reports, etc) that were still residing on the system. As hard as I try to do as much prework as possible before starting on a new submittal I always end up with many many corrections - moving pictures, aligning text, etc. Hopefully everyone is really good about cleaning up these old versions, but if you're like me, you might want to check the Page History on your submittals. You might be amazed (just don't delete the most recent version.)

I also deleted about 10% of my photos in the past few months - lots of photos I'm sure I thought it was a good idea at the time to upload, but were just sitting in la la land not attached to anything, never to be used or probably seen again.

I heard about this a while back in a thread...and did some clean up one other time. I just need to get in the habit of going back and deleting old versions as soon as I'm done with the submittal.

Don't feel bad. I counted 22 versions I deleted on one TR alone! It's amazing how many versions you can create when can't get a picture or text to line up the way you want.

I didn't know old versions were being saved either .
Just cleaned a bunch up.

Your message is a great public service. Like others, I had forgotten that drafts are saved. Going back and deleting older versions seems akin to trail maintenance; not always fun, but you're doing something essential.

Good move, Mark. Earlier this year, I deleted all the old versions of my area and mountain pages. Next up: routes and trip reports.

I think the clean-up is more a matter of removing extraneous ID tags from the database, rather than the actual space freed. Deleting older versions really only removes the html code; the pictures exist only as links to images stored elsewhere. My old html versions rarely exceed 60 kb each; that's much less than the typical photo uploaded to the site.

I think the uber-elves planned to limit the number of stored versions by deleting the oldest, automatically, after a certain period of time.

I agree with this. Removing old versions by hand is a waste of time. They don't take up much room.

I didn't realize until recently that old copies of pages existed. When I discovered it I deleted them. I guess I should do the same with trip reports.

Me too!. Chose a short report as I was terrified of deleting the whole thing.

But does anyone know if there is any sort of back up just in case I accidentally delete the current version as well? I have the text and images on my PC, (somewhere!), but not the layout I have used on SP.

Bryan - you can't delete the current version. But to make sure, simply tick everything and then untick the bottom-most box.

And yes, there are backups, but it's a mess to restore single pages out of them.

I could probably stand to go in and do some more photo deleting. I know that over 95% of my photos are attached to an object...but I'm sure some could be deleted without detracting from the page.
