In all honesty the whole POTD and POTW thing has grown into complete absurdity. I know there's much critique about the voting system for pictures, and while I'm not directly supporting to overhaul it itself, it's obvious that the POTD/W feature only nourishes neurotic efforts to get some of the alleged attention that comes from it, which evidently has a strong negative effect on the idea that votes should indicate content quality. At the risk of getting flamed (have at it): A prime example are the current two PsOTD/W which IMO are nothing more but an insult to the high quality pictures found throughout the depths of SP.

My suggestion: Show one random picture on the front page instead of POTD/W, which changes with every page load. It could either show completely random pictures out of all there are, or pick from a pool of pictures selected on criteria such as [most recent OR above a certain score].

If you have an opinion on the matter, please share.

I'm all for it. I don't know much about how the pictures get rated and selected for POTD/W but I work in an office all day. This means SP is kinda hanging around all the time and I'm sick of the POTW about half way through the first day. I vote for a POTHD(half day). We could even call it pot-head as a cute little nick name.

What would be good, would be if each SP member could only have one POTD in a 30-45 day time period. This would open it up significantly and pretty much end POTD voting efforts.

Since you put effort into creating quality pages yourself you obviously do care about the quality of content offered on SP too. Oh the hypocrisy..

Also a good idea. Although I've always liked the idea of random pictures or pages as it simply brings a bit of needed dynamic to the rather static main pages.

And so much more than the home page. I'm sure when visitors browse to SP, the first thing they do is bypass the home page and look for what's new. Their desired location was likely submitted in the previous 3 days.

It is relevant. A shame some folks attack the importance simply because they disagree with the subject matter.

My humble opinion: What happens is, there's some SPers that receive a fast number of votes because they're "famous" (so to speak) here at SP. Some good examples are Marc, Afzal, Twins, and many others...
That doesn't mean they don't post good quality photos, on the contrary! I love their uploads as much as tons of people here!
The fact is, they get more vote because they attract more visitors.
Sometimes there's "better" shots out there that don't make it for POTD? Yes of course. But if you ask them, i'm sure they don't care at all about make it or not for POTD or POTW, they have so many already...hehehe

If this thread grows up (and i think it will), i vote for a period just like Chad said, i guess that's a fair decision.

Since Matt is putting a bit of work into improving a few things around SP, this seems like a good time to make suggestions. This one especially in respect to the other topic I've posted the link to.

I brought it up, I've made a good argument, and I'll leave it at that.

The POTD/POTW racket here used to really get under my skin, but I realized nothing was going to change and just let it go.

I agree, though, that it gets boring seeing the same picture on the front page all day and especially all week. Once, I suggested going back to Photo of the Hour but with three slots so that each day, 72 different pictures would be featured. Yes, the system would still be manipulated by a few people, but there would still be more variety in both type of photo and people featured.

Alternatively, I think it would be awesome if POTD could be rigged so that the only photos featured would be ones attached to new mountains, routes, areas, and trip reports. Anyone here can contribute in one of those ways, so everyone would have a fair chance.

My final bit of advice for those who want to see different selections featured: vote only on new photos that are attached to new beta pages. Most pictures I vote on now are ones attached to new mountain and route pages that I read.

And before someone jumps out to call me a hypocrite-- yes, a number of my pictures have been POTD, but almost all have been part of information pages I've put up, I don't make albums to feature the pictures, and I usually detach them from such albums that others attach them to because that's not how I want my pictures represented.

Edited to make a correction: Under the current display, the POTH idea would feature 48 pictures per day, not 72. The old format displayed 3 at a time: POTW, POTD, and POTH.

I would fully support a random picture as long as it has a vote of 87% or higher...weed out some of the weird stuff that shows up on here

At least get rid of photo of the week, i mean yes they are amazing artistic views of our mountains, but im a little sick of seeing the same one for a week, and with the open space we could implement the random picture
