That was indeed the way it was supposed to work. See with the current way people vote it does have a negative effect.

Let me put it into perspective... if people all of a sudden started voted honestly on a particular member by giving them 9/10's and 8/10's they would Never win photo of the day. Not that it matters that much, but there is a lot of truth in this article:

In recent times I have been voting 8/10's on pages that I know could have way more information. I don't do it often, but feel as though its a way of letting the author know "hey buddy, you could use a little more work". As soon as the page is updated and I know about it, I'll gladly change my vote.

Why? I've noticed this and am not a fan of this system. It forces a conformity in my opinion. This would discourage people from voting 8/10 on a half way decent page because it doesn't effect the score all they get out of it is the owner complaining saying "how dare you down rate my page that I haven't touched since 2001".

Go back and change your vote to an 8, and look at the affect it has on his score. Then change it to a 10.

That will clear things up for you....or it should.

I think most of you are overcomplicating things. I either like a page or a photo, or I don't. If I like it, it gets 10, that is, I add my vote to the quality of the subject. If I don't care for it, I obstain from voting. Simple. In final analysis we either like the subject or we don't. Grades of likes and dislikes seem to be totally meaningless, at least to me. BTW I suspect I'm not the only one who does it that way.

I vote this way on photos and trip reports. If I'm not blown away, I don't vote. If I do vote its because it knocks my socks off and I give it a 10. Someone mentioned the voting system works simply as a 'like' button.

Route pages and articles I treat differently. If I read a route page from a route that I've climbed and feel there is room for improvement I'll give it less than a 10 and PM the author with feedback. Peer review is important - I've planned entire trips to unfamiliar peaks based largely on the information here on SP. Perhaps the comments should be used for peer review.

Uhmm, I don't think you have been reading the posts, we are voting just as you are. But having the option of voting an 8 or 9 where the vote still adds to the score as opposed to depleting is not an option. Those pages that need just a little more content deserve a positive score, maybe not a 10 but an 8 or a 9 and that should be adding not subtracting from the overall page score.

I think a- lotta folks are AFRAID to give out constructive criticism on people's pages, because of possible retaliation and bruising somebody's EGO.

Suppose the best way to do it would be by Private Message, until the voting system can be somehow changed.

In the meantime, it'd be easier to LAUGH at yourself and not worry too much how another person (with a different perception) sees something that the
owner of the page or photo may not see.

Voting is mainly just an emotional impulse, anyway. Comments are much better in projecting a meaningful outcome to (and for) the Page ..
