Beating a dead horse on voting again ?

Sorry, but I don't understand SP's voting system ...

Here's a poster that I admire .... he specifically stated (in red type) that he didn't want people to vote on his image ..

http://www.summitpost.org/hooray-i-quit-smoking/810329

NOT that I don't admire the message .... I love the message, but WHAT does the photo have to do with mountains and rocks, and why are people voting when he specifically told them not to ...?... You be the judge :? ........

Because when you tell people not to vote, it means they want more people to vote on it. C'mon man you've been here longer than me!

I gave it the requisite 10/10.

So ..... if you DON'T tell them to vote, and they vote anyway, that means the image will "rise to the top" faster than something related to mountains and rocks?

What the hell is this site turning into .... FACEBOOK ? ....... :?:

It is part of what needs to be improved on this site, as you already know. The picture voting mechanism could be revamped such that newer users or more mountainous or action photos had increased opportunities to be more visible. I believe that if this was implemented, we would have more contributions and increased membership. You can't blame the current contributions or members for what happens... people are playing by the rules of the system that has been provided.

I have laid out a couple of very EASY to implement options for the elves and the owners and even got a response from Matt. Unfortunately the owners really don't give a damn enough to do anything no matter how easy it is or how much help is offered despite the additional revenue potential involved. It doesn't matter how little work is involved. All they care about is sitting on their asses.

Perhaps, more simply, the author has tried to share a nice moment of his life with you, not some thinking to start a Forum.
Perhaps the author was content with a simple greeting or comment.
Maybe this is too simple and clear so that it may be understood.
Larry, for your information, the image was actually taken during a long and marvellous mountain trip on the Western Alps.

I wish you good night.

Roberto.

I hope you got that my first post above had some sarcasm in it. No issue with your photo- don't remove it.

The voting process needs some serious (and easy to implement) adjustments, but nothing wrong with submitting a photo like that one...

Larry, could you edit the animated gifs from your posts? They really hurt my eyes, and they seem to have no bearing on the subject of this thread, nor on mountains in general.

Say, is it true that people can get power points just by commenting on contributions?

Yes. Each comment or response is 1/20th of a point. Though I very much doubt that is the motivation for most.

I very much agree with this statement. Recently I posted a picture of a famous mountain that almost everyone here knows about. It got quite a few votes but was not that great of quality. Some of my other photos that were much better ended up with 0 votes... maybe 1 or 2. I'm not asking for votes. I'm saying is that people also like to vote on what they are familiar with which I'm still having a hard time getting used to that concept. Those same photos that have 0 votes also happen to have a few hits for that day. And guess what happens when those photos don't get viewed within a few days? The people who commonly vote here do not see it. No big deal, the rest of the world gets to see it just fine, but my point is that perhaps if people were more willing to vote on things that deserve a little better than no vote, that might help the system.

But at the same time if a nice pic is over rated (more votes than it deserves), I simply don't vote on it. Even if I like it.

Larry has made 11300 comments. He is likely just be a gregarious guy.

Hey Larry, what you do is OK with me. But we cut you some slack, so maybe you should worry less about the occasional deviation in protocol.

+ 1

In this case, the poster specifically stated (beneath the photo), PLEASE, DON'T VOTE! So, the photo ended up getting more votes than it deserved.

There's a-lotta things in this world that are "overrated." Some routes on mountains are overrated ..... some people are OVERRATED ... some things that
people do and say are OVERRATED ...

About the ONLY thing NOT OVERRATED is a bear sitting on a picnic table, patiently awaiting an extremely cold beverage ..... 8)

But ... what was "left behind" is very MUCH OVERRATED. Kind of like a vote that was never cast onto some that was UNDERRATED, or a vote that was cast onto something that was OVERRATED ......
