A more slick frontpage: http://www.alpinejosh.com/sp/ 8)
Some of the style is loosely based on what I have on all my pages. But I modified it to meet the standards of SP.

I think we are also going to see some changes in how the voting system works. More database optimization when the site is moved onto a new server. Already the elves featured more pages than usual which is showing a sign of a more dynamic frontpage! :o

The rest is some what a secret. I only have hints of what new changes might take place. There might be only a few changes, there might be a lot. We'll see. 8) Also I will be upgrading the other parts of the template as well. Matt of course will be the one who actually applies the upgrades that I make.

The shadow boxes around all the photos on the home page look like someone is trying to demonstrate too much programming knowledge. How many websites have you seen that display photos like that?

Look at some of the websites from the networks and major newspapers and you will see aesthetically pleasing presentation of photos.

The yellow shading on the side looks like a nice addition. Actually i have come to like that a lot. But the box around the center is still buggy. It has a shadow on the right (not necessary since a grey line would be ideal) and nothing on the left on my safari mobile browser.

Also the inbox is still showing 1 message.

I admit not many frontpages have that. However that's another aspect that I like about it. It uses new code (CSS3) that many web developers are still unaware of it or have yet to figure it out. It's a new function that does well. Even Mountain Project has a box shadow around the images of the site. It's much better than the dull grey border in my opinion. It fades out and makes the image stick out. :D

The yellow shading was Matt's idea (which I liked). Originally I picked a very light blue. I liked green better but didn't even try it because I knew it would be out of SP's color scheme. But then Matt proposed yellow. I fine tuned the color using a color scale. Another idea that was thrown out was keeping it white (before the yellow idea was figured out). I personally was against it because the sides did not stick out as well and it made the template look a bit more boring. Could you email me a screen shot of this bug? The border on the left side uses a 260px position change which Safari might not be reading. :x Perhaps I might be able to write it in a way that is mobile phone friendly.

Although not always one of Josh's biggest fans, I have to admit I like this design quite a bit.

Glad you liked the new design. I'm guessing my pages don't have enough pictures for you.

Well I liked Matt's idea (the yellow shading on the side). Guess I'm losing the battle on the shadows. : - (

But really... is there even ONE website out there that uses shadows like that?

Yes, one that I'm a fan of called NoNumber. (They got good extensions) :) Another example of the box shadow around images is Shape5. I can find more examples but that's not the point of this thread.

 Yup. I know, the first one has a lot of art in the template. But that's another aspect to Peter that I like (the owner of NoNumber). Like I said before, it's uncommon to have a box shadow for the images. But I feel like I implemented it properly. The second link is more to SP's liking. Still too stylized of course.

How about putting the FAQ link in bold red at the top of the page.

PS,

I like most stuff on SP, so this isn't a complaint, but the email system doesn't work.

I get a lot of emails from people, but you can't respond to them. The only way to respond to them is to find out who they are, go to their profile and send them a PM. In that case, it's easier to just use the PM system in the first place, but many members (especially new ones) don't know that if they send an email it can't be responded to.

The email feature should be deleted unless there is a way to make them "reply-able".

Thanks.

Thanks-- this is the second reminder in two days that I need to make sure Matt knows about this. :)
