RMI pays between $125/day and $250/day DOE. I have heard of some extremely talented guides charging clients up to $600/day. I have a friend who supported a family of 4 by being a guide and writer.

I know in 2005 on Denali some of the senior guides were making $250 per day, others not so much. My friend guides up here in Canada, in Africa and Nepal and charges $350 per day for local stuff and can make a living at it but there are down sides. The work isn't steady, it takes a while to get to a moderate income level and he's never home. In fact he considers his house to be an expensive warehouse since there are times when he's only there 3 days out of the month.

As for charging more than that per day guides can ask whatever they want but they might not have many clients.

When you're young and don't have much to worry about, $5.21 an hour to be climbing mountains isn't bad at all.

the national outdoor leadership school has very in depth courses for a serious person who wants to be a guide. they have very good books as well
