The latest from WDOT:

Spring 2011

PASS STATUS: Closed

Spring opening work begins April 11...

So, it looks like we might have the latest spring opening in 20 years. We took our annual scouting trip up the highway on Thursday, March 17, and found a whole lot of snow. The snow is up to 60 feet deep in the Liberty Bell avalanche zone.

Not if you have ever biked over them.

I've never driven the North Cascase Highway, so I was a bit confused.

I ought to give that hwy a try this year.

Thanks Josh.

Remind me of a photo I took:

This was near Rainy Pass, I plan on biking it one of these days. :)

Currently there are 60 feet of avalanche debris at Washington Pass. They expect the latest opening since the highway was built. Much more snow expected this weekend. Avalanche danger is extreme.

Washington Pass and Rainy Pass are several miles apart- sort of twin passes that get you over the Cascades.

Bump - They are making pretty good progress - be sure to check out the latest photos, there are some very impressive shots indicating just how much snow there still is up there...

Thanks for update, Fred. That's a LOT of work to get it open. I wonder why they can't wait another month to start.
