I will be attempting Mt. Adams mid-october from south route. I was looking at the aerial photos and it seems that the upper Mazama Glacier is generally Crevasse free from above lunch counter to almost near Piker's Peak. It appears to have some crevasses at Piker's Peak. I was thinking of traversing to upper Mazama from lunch counter and traversing back to south route before Piker's. The reason is to get some more snow climbing and adventure. I will be hiking alone and I do not have Glacier travel skills. Let me know if I am being silly. Thanks!

You're being silly. It ALWAYS helps to have a partner with you during sudden "whiteout" conditions.

I'm a firm believer in Free Choice. If you choose to go by yourself, that's your OWN choice, but I would choose a partner if it were me doing the climb.

Yeah, another reason WHY it's best to have a partner. In sudden "whiteout " conditions, a.k.a. notorious change in weather, TWO would get lost instead of one ... but at least you'd be lost TOGETHER. And, don't forget the Three Dog Night number ...

I would only go in October with a partner. I have been in a White out on Mt Adams in July. And Two years ago this October three of us had our tent collapse because of massive amounts of snow on Mt Adams. We had a very close call. Had we lost our common sense and composure we would have had a train wreck.
Also without glacier travel experience I would not go by myself, (solo). Just my 2 cents. I love Mt Adams and wouldn't discourage climbing it, just be safe. I'm still hoping to climb it this year myself.

All right, got it... thanks for the input... I will stick to the standard south route, but I do not have a partner yet... I will have to rely on Compass, GPS, and my Engineering senses!

I don't think you necessarily need a partner for doing the South route, though a partner is always nice.
Just watch the weather, and don't go if it looks ify. If it looks good, solo on that route is fine.
Also, let me know when you're going, and perhaps I could team up with you(if you're interested).
