John and Josue, thank you very much! I plan to go to Izta in the middle of February as soon as I will be able to find some partners.
Josue, have an interesting and safe climb.

Alex:
I just got back from the mexican volcanoes and there were no problems accesing Izta, just had to get the usual permit at Amecameca. Conditions on Izta are extremely dry and you can now see patches of dirt in the middle of the rapidly melting belly glacier.

Alex,

I'm also going to Ixta before I go to Orizaba. I'm planning a warm-up hike on the mountain Feb 4th, and then climbing in two days (5th and 6th). I have a rental car and I will be coming from Puebla. Let me know if you are interested in joining me (i'm going solo right now).

Woodie,
I tried to rearrange my plans at work, but it looks like I would not be able to go before Feb. 9 or 10. Sorry!
Anyway, if anybody plans the hike after Feb. 9 I would like to join.
BTW, I thought abou La Malinche as a warm-up candidate. Any comments?

I'm sure La Malinche would be a good warm-up. If possible I'll post some info on SP, if I find access to a computer before I return. Have a great trip! Also, did you already get a permit for Ixta? Do you just fax the form and pay at the park entrance?

Woodie,
It looks like I've missed something. I was sure that it was possible just to buy a permit at the park entrance. Am I wrong? Do I need to fill out the forms before?
Thanks,

Alex

You can get a permit at the park office in Amecameca at the zocalo or on line on the park's web site- it's given on the SP Ixta page. I'm not sure if the office is open on the weekend so I'm trying to get it now before I leave.

Hi Alex & Woodie

Both are right.

You could download it or simply ask for one at Park's entrance and fill it out (as far as I remember that permit is given both in Amecameca and in Paso de Cortés).

Usually, what I do is:

*I directly go to Paso de Cortés
*Here, I have got to ask for one permit, fill it out and pay (less than 1USD by one day. If you are staying there 1 day and 1 night you will paying less than 2 USD)

And that's it.

I think it's quite practical having it before you get there however I haven't had any problem to access if I don't have it previously.

I hope it helps, and have a nice hike.

Thanks for the info, I was worried about red tape since I am going to Ixta next weekend. I printed two copies of the permit, so I can hand it in and pay at Paseo de Cortes.

Hello Alex,

I was on Izta in late December. Prior to leaving Oregon there was a story on national news that Popo was errupting. It had no effect on our access to Izta. One of the guides that went with us is still in Puebla and there is no restriction on climbing. It was interesting at times, we would be hiking along and feel the ground shake and look to the South to see smoke coming out of the crater. Got some fantastic photos of Popo, especially the morning we went to the summit.
Hope you have a good trip!

Thanks to everyone who answered my questions.
Unfortunately, all my potential partners disappeared, so, I am looking for partners. Let me know if anybody is going to hike Ixta over the standard route between Feb. 11 and Feb. 20 and would not mind to have on more member in the team. Or, if you know any good guide available there.
