Orizaba Trip Jan 15-18

We are leaving from Colorado, USA to attempt the Jampa Glacier route on Jan 14. Our first possible summit attempt will be on Jan 16, with the 17th & 18th as backup days. If anybody has any route condition information to share as we close on those dates, that would be appreciated. It sounds like things were a bit dicey toward the end of Dec. Also if anybody is making an attempt those days and would like to team up, there are only two of us at this time. And finally, if there are any alternate route suggestions(Ruta Sur??) from recent travels, details of such would also be appreciated.

We are cheating slightly since we will be camping/climbing/acclimatizing between 10000-14000' for the days preceeding our departure.

Dan, for some reason my email to you did not go through. I will try to be at Sr. Gerer^s hotel in Tlach...the night of the 14 or 15. Things are not cast in stone yet as I am still in Guatemala and transport is slow. Hopfully we can meet up. Stay in touch. -Chris

Got it. We will most likely be stuck in Puebla the night of the 14th, unless there is a really late bus. So we shall check for you in Tlach on the 15th.

Worst case, I will leave a message with Sr. Gerar's hotel as we are planning to get the first lift we can to Piedra Grande on the 15th.

Also, we will have our radios on; channel 11, code 11. They are just the standard motorola, FRS radios. If you don't have one, Sr. Gerar might.

Chris,

Just adding a note here. We are looking at either the normal route, or the Espinoza route depending upon glacier ice conditions. We will be hauling some pro(screws & pickets), but hopefully not need it.

It looks like it has been hot(70-80F) and dry down there the last two weeks, which should make it interesting.

This sounds like a great trip. Let's hit the Boulder rock tonight, and discuss as I am considering it!

Dan, OK, sorry but it is the 12th and I find myself here in Tlachichuca. They say there are several cold fronts rolling through, especially for Sunday so I think I might just go up to Piedra Grande tomarrow and see what can be seen. Yes it is dry but right now at 6:46 it is around 48 degrees,or maybe it just feel this way after the tropics in Chiapas. A bit humid too, I grew up in Boulder and now live in Montana and am not to fond of humidity. So anyway, I might not be here but then again I might still be, good luck. -Chris
