hey guys...

i'll be in shanghai for 5 days in the next three weeks this month but, just wanted to see if i could attempt a peak within that time that's ideally close by? anything within a day travel time either by bus/train/or even plane?? i'm not opposed to a guided/organized guided tour climb since i have limited time as well so if anybody has any suggestions, know of a company that arranges these type of trips or have done something like this before please post up here or feel free and shoot me PM...any help or information would be greatly appreciated...

I lived in Shanghai for a year. Good climbing but only if you like climbing stairs of tall buildings. The only place I recommend within a day's drive or train ride isHuangshanwhich has great scenery and hiking but is sometimes crowded.

If you can fly somewhere, your best bet is Yangshuo (near Guilin) for sport climbing and scenery or go west to Sichuan/Tibet for some real mountaineering. For Yangshuo you'd want at least 4 days and for anything in Sichuan/Tibet I'd recommend 8 days minimum.

Mountaineering from SH requires great commitment and time. Two day travel to the nearest climbing peaks in Sichuan puts you in basecamp for acclimatization at upwards of 3500m. You'll need two days to travel back assuming you make all of your connections.

There are some smaller, non-technical peaks you could attempt in a day if you are in a hurry, but you will want much more time to do anything more involved. Also note, there are no good guide books and none of the trails/routes are marked. Either you do a 1st ascent, or you will need to hire a guide or go with someone who knows the area.

Yangshuo is an easy alternative is you like sport climbing. Always lots of climbers there and an excellent guidebook.

pat: i heard about huangshan and about the crowds but, i think maybe this might be my best option since i'm short on time. i realize shanghai isn't the most ideal locale to do any type of mountaineering,etc...but, just trying to squeeze in a peak or a scramble ideally if at all possible while i'm out there.

do you know any specifics about the overnight train from shanghai or any other details you could share about this hike or can it be arranged with any recommended local shanghai guide companies? i also heard that there are other peaks in the surrounding area as well so are these do-able in a day and not too difficult to route find?

if anybody has gone out to huangshan from shanghai please post up here and would be cool to hear about your experiences and please share any info. about this hike here or feel free and shoot me a PM too.

bob: thanks for the info. about mountaineering in tibet...would love to check out your suggestions but, think i'm too short on time...definitely will keep it in mind the next time i'm out in this part of the world!

Do realize that climbing in Huangshan is officially off limits and if the local govt. finds you climbing there your life will become difficult. I suggest that you have an alternative or fall-back plan in your pocket in case you run into trouble. Climbing the major formations remains the dream of most serious climbers in south and east China.

can i go to shanghai and join mountainer club?or dont have club there ?
