Expedition Dispatch Translation Guide

Says: This was not the year for Broad Peak (K2, G2 etc etc)
Means: There were no big Japanese or Korean expeditions with a dozen Sherpas to break trail and fix ropes for us to follow.

Says: John Smith decided he would not go any higher this year and descended to BC, happy to have achieved a personal height record.
Means: John Smith was in way over his head. He didn't have enough experience before coming here, didn't train hard enough and figured he would just make it through somehow. And hey, repeat business and all that ...

Says: The route was in bad condition this year.
Means: We're not good enough to climb it, this company is too cheap to hire Sherpas and there's no one else here to do it for us. And we got scared.

Says: We need to wait until the mountain is ready to let us climb her.
Means: I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm not really a guide, I just got a free trip in return for running around KTM/ISB organising this farce, and hey, they needed somebody's name on the paperwork and that chick at the gym was impressed when I showed her the website on my iPhone. I hope to hell someone here knows what they're doing or the Sherpas from the Japanese team can get some ropes up there, or we ain' goin' nowhere. I need to get online and change my Facebook status, how's the connection ...

Says: We'll bide our time and let the crowds go through, so we have the mountain to ourself and it'll be safer that way.
Means: We'll let the other teams do the work to break trail and fix ropes, then just coast in behind them when the hard stuff is done. And we're still not acclimatised, because we spent more time at this computer than on the mountain.

Says: Time is running out, winter approaches, the summit will remain untouched this year.
Means: We didn't allow enough time to climb a mountain this size, we're sick of the food and football season starts next week.

I feel a distinct lack of repsect on this forum . I will let you both know, that I have climbed one of the seven summits in winter - solo and without oxygen or sherpa support...and its a bloody long way to drive to Thredbo in friday arvo traffic!!

..and Damien, that's hilarious. i think i will C+P that and send it to some of the people I suspect you are referring to.

I would damn well hope the disrespect was obvious - it took ages to type all that! :-)

Of course it was not directed at anyone on this forum, just the scene in general (OK, inspired in part by one or two individuals who shall remain nameless ...).

I think it's classic and the protagonists past and future deserve some satire to keep egos in check.
