Hi All.

I'm going to China on Wednesday next week. I live at 7,300' but will spend my first 3 weeks working in Beijing. I then have a week off during which time I plan to spend in Yunnan province, in Dali and Shan-gri-la. Anyway, I am thinking of trying to climb something out there. If I could scamper up a 6,000m peak it would be awesome. I've never been that high but have been close to the top of Citlate'petl in Mexico which is just under that. The deal is I don't have much time to plan anything before I go, I can't carry climbing gear etc. But I am thinking of something that would be basically a 1-3 day outing with a guide. I'd need the guide to provide ALL gear. If no one thinks this is doable on such a short time scale uggestions for a lower mountain to climb (i.e. hike) out of Yunnan would be appreciated.

I've had good luck with this company. You could look through their offerings. Everything they have might not be posted. So you could email them.

There's some good mountaineers in China. Some outdoor clubs that have their act together. Though they may expect you to be acclimatized when you meet them.

Your Mandarin is passable? Though sometimes I resort to Cantonese. Or mix them up if I get a little flustered. I'd love to know how you make out. This is high on my list.

There are no 6K m peaks in that area. Anything technical will require a lot more research on your part.

I'd recommend a hike up Haba Peak. You'll need one night on the mountain (unless you are very fit) and can do it by yourself - axe and crampons necessary and you can probably rent them near the borttom. If you want a local guide to help, you can find one in Haba village at the base at a reasonable price. I cannot recommend ANY company. Send me a PM if you have questions.

Yeah. I'm thinking that guide book I read that described Dali as being surrounded by 20,000' peaks is bullshit. I haven't been able to find anything on the internets about those peaks. If I decide to hike up Haba I'll PM you.

I'm not sure what my acclimation will be like when I get there, but after 3 weeks in Beijing I'll probably be coughing up lung.
