Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondacks

I'm going to be in the Adirondacks in a few weeks and plan to backpack etc

On the day I head back to NYC I'd like to go up Whiteface Mountain before I leave, but I have to head off early and it doesn't open till 9am!

Is it possible to drive up before the opening time and pay on the return? Or do they block the road? I only ask as when I was in Colorado got up Mount Evans for sunrise!

It's been a while but I am pretty sure it is gated outside of their operating hours. I think you are OK biking, running, hiking up the road when the gate is closed. Enjoy your visit.
