Add to this lot, me on October 4th, sitting down exhausted on the Aiguille du Midi Arete wanting neither to ascend nor descend. Fortunately it was a low key rescue, a PGHM guy 'towing' me up by a rope around my waist.
I admit to this, as a warning to others. Judging your energy levels is a massive call, which you've got to weigh up against where you are, what you're trying to do, the gear and provisions you've got, what the weather might do (or has just done, even).

Chosing a speed of ascent, that will work, is very very simple!

Joining up with people faster than oneself is a severe strategic mistake. At least if they are not able to slow down (most people aren't, we just cant help it, it's still a sport, and if someone is slower, the better!)

Main risk in the mountains: oneself and the team.
