Sand Fire - Wildlife Waystation in peril

by Tom Kenney » Sat Jul 23, 2016 10:09 pm

The Sand Fire, started yesterday at CA-14 near west end of Soledad Canyon, has now spread south nearly to Gold Creek in Little Tajunga area. It is now very close to the Wildlife Waystation, which is a shelter-of-last-resort for many large animals (both native and exotic). They are asking for donations, transportation and storage space.

GEOMAC Fire Mapper - Select Data Layers->Active Fires->MODIS Fire Detection to see current boundary.

Sadly, the boundary implies that the fire has consumed the last of the oak/pine forest on Mendenhall Ridge and Magic Mountain that was left standing after the Curve Fire.

EDIT: Updates

GEMOAC boundary shows expansion - spreading west of Bear Divide toward Camp 9 fire station, Pacoima Reservoir and Kagel Mountain engulfed (southwest corner), already crossed Yerba Buena Ridge at Gold Creek Saddle (southeast), nearing Quail Spring / Indian Canyon Road (northeast), but contained along Sand Canyon Road (northwest).

Sky is VERY dark here in Northridge. Getting a splitting headache and starting to have respiratory problems...only been outside for 3 minutes today.
