Waiting in the Tetons

by TomSellick » Tue Jun 08, 2010 7:30 am

Hello all.

I am currently working here in Grand Teton National Park, where it has been cold and rainy for the past 2 weeks. However, I'm sure things will turn for the better soon.

If you're going to be in the area, look me up! I'm looking for trustworthy climbing and hiking partners to do some fun routes this summer. If you're interested, PM me or post to this page.

Just throwing that out there. Here's hoping for a long dry summer!

When and what are you guys climbing?

edit: What days in particular. I'll be down there probably starting on the 4th.

Arriving on 7/2 and leaving on 7/7. We have a condo in Jackson Hole but will get out for at least two days to do something. Hoping for the East Ridge of the Grand but if conditions/weather are dicey, we may do something smaller. What are your plans? Regardless, we should grab some brews!

My thoughts exactly. I'm taking a friend up the Upper Exum. But we're in Jellystone for a couple of days before that and flexible. Headed south from Bozeman Friday night, hoping to hike in on the 5th. She's never been to the area at all, so we'll hit Jackson for dinner and beer at some point. I'll send you a PM.

That should give you an idea of snow conditions right now...

I've watched conditions past couple of summers and on July 4, I'm pretty sure, it is full-blown winter conditions on the Grand. 2 summers ago they in fact, had a huge winter storm. If you're going in June, early July, I'd definitely bring ice gear.

Tetons June 20-30

by Garon Coriz » Fri Jun 11, 2010 12:12 am

I'm coming up with a friend to check out Exum. I'm staying until the 30th but my friend may leave on the 25th. I'm interested in Symmetry Spire, Middle Teton, Nez Perce, and whatever else I can get. We should definitely at least meet up for chow/brews. PM if you can.

Peace

Hiking, Snow levels, Fires,

by Doublecabin » Fri Jun 11, 2010 12:45 am

I am hoping to make it to the Climbers Ranch Sunday for the last day of volunteer week, but this rain and snow wreaks havoc with spring chores here at 8,000'.

My few climbing days are long gone but I'm an avid hiker. Tom I live in the Dunoir Valley NW of Dubois and get over to the park quite often to camp or stay at a high school buddy's in Jackson. If you ever want a change of pace and to see Grizz, wolves, bighorns, etc., look me up as Double Cabin [two words] at backpacker.com. because I don't get here all that often.

Snow is below normal in the Tetons but lots of May snow has Jackson Lake at 98% of capacity. Expect much more snow in the Winds and areas East of the Continental Divide.

I love beautiful dry weather, but I went through hell in '88 so you'll have to forgive me for wanting a "normal" summer. Unfortunately later summer temps are forecast to be WELL above normal.

I still need to do the plain old Grand and wouldn't mind climbing some other peaks there as well. My schedule in summer is limited, but I could get away at least once or twice.

Not necessarily. I've climbed it on the 4th of July in years past with zero snow except for the small snowfield at the summit.

Check with the rangers for up-to-date conditions. There are also numerous other internet resources with detailed route conditions/info.

b. - sounds good! drop me a PM and we will try to get together

It looks like winter in there, Biglost. Summer is definitely setting in at full force here in California. Looks like we skipped Spring altogether

Yea, three years ago we climbed the direct south buttress on Moran over the 4th, and we almost couldn't find water along the route. It won't be anything like winter up there, but probably lots of snow still. The East Ridge will likely be in prime condition, with enough snow to make it interestingly awesome.

Since I don't live anywhere close within driving distance, I plan to be there in August (18-25) to ensure snow-free condies. Would like to do Full Exum, and other stuff, maybe hit the Winds as well. PM me if you plan to be there around those dates.
