What delimitates a mountain range ?

Postby visentin » Sat Nov 07, 2009 4:35 pm

I'm rising this topic because the same question comes back for a couple of mountain ranges.
What factors should be considered ?
- Topography ?
- Hydrography ?
- Geology ?
- Culture ?
Apparently none of these fulfill all conditions, and it looks like only a mix of all of them can make a good consensus.
What do you think ?

Rocks don't give a damn, but some ranges are distinctive in their formation. Geologic reasons often account for a difference in range naming. Passes and divides also seem to separate ranges. Names are words, and words give a sound to an abstraction, so naming something just makes it easier for others to known what you are talking about.
