Date Climbed: Jan 5, 2015

Something to do while waiting for the snow up high to cook down. A fun climb, especially if you try not to touch the cables. Trip report, though it's mostly about getting spanked by Mount Lemmon the day before...

Did this peak on a weekday so it wasn't too crowded. Hiked up from the Hunter Trail.

i was driving by it for work so i figured what the hell...
the gate attendent told me it was getting late for a hike to the summit to start at noon and that the average hiker did it in 4 hours..

Oy, the heat almost killed us, but three Coloradans took the Sunset Trail to the summit of Picacho, then looped over the saddle to UN 3161 which has a divine little knife edge and summit scramble...then we staggered back through the heat to the car. What a wonderful day! Partner: Candace & Dave.

End of September, a little hot but not too bad. Just before the busy season. Nice hike, right off the highway.

Dartmouth Hiker

Hiked this with my 49-year-old mother, but after being low on energy at the start we did fine. Strongly recommend gloves, shoes with good traction, and enough water (we had all three). This would be a toughie without the cables there, but because they're there this is really no trickier a climb than Camelback.

Nice views from the top, all the way to Lemmon, Graham, Wrightson and Babo...I also did the 5-minute easy side trip to the other "horn" of the summit block. I'm sure I'll be back!

had a nice hike up Picacho Pk with my girlfriend and dog. Since the pup got scared on the cables, I actually put him into my pack and carried him to the summit. It was getting warm by the end of the day!

surgentThe cables

The cables actually date from about 50+ years ago when there was an old tower of some sort on top (light beacon?). Workers needed a safer way to the top. I have not been to Europe and cannot compare their V.F. routes to this, but I'd guess their cabling is a bit better thought out than here. In many parts of this climb the cabling and other metal apparati can be more a hindrance than a help. I don't know of any AZ peak that has been cabled for the sake of ease in the v.f. sense.

The Euro's are doing it more an more these days, they are building new 'Via Ferrato's' each year. It could be a cool way to check out the Dolomites or other areas once we make it over there....
