Pileated Woodpecker Holes

Pileated Woodpecker Holes

Pileated woodpeckers (dryocopus pileatus) are about the size of a crow. While searching for insects, they make a very distinctive hole, which is much larger than most woodpeckers make, and squarish. This tree is filled with such holes. Imaged in the Ozark National Forest, AR in Apr 12. On a prior trip in Oklahoma I had the opportunity to watch a pair of these fascinating birds perform their mating ritual. You can see a similar video of that here.
