Pine Grove Furnace - 1998

Pine Grove Furnace - 1998

Stopping at Pine Grove Furnace, PA Pine Grove Furnace is considered by some to be the midpoint of the AT and has ice cream for celebration in the summer! This was taken in early November, 1998 with my son's Boy Scout troop on a weekend backpacking trip along the AT. The only dangers that weekend were for the boy in the middle "falling over" and for all of us, avoiding the hunters on the adjoining land. The adults weren't tired after dinner that weekend but the younger kids asked if they could go to sleep as soon as it was dark. We looked at our watches; it was only 6:30 pm! Goes to show you that a little exercise in cool weather tires young pups out kinda early. And yes, that's me with an old external frame pack!

Also ...

Food always tastes better outdoors, and time
always speeds by much more rapidly outside than
it does sitting in front of a computer.

This makes ME remember my days in the Boy Scouts ... Troop 604 of northern Utah - Stansbury Council ..

Yep, them were the days.

Re: Also ...

Glad I could jog your memory a bit Larry! And camping and hiking always tired those kids out until summer camp at least!

And I can always pig out camping and lose weight!

Re: Also ...

When was the first "smore" invented?
Was that back in the early 1970's ??

On camping trips, I loved smores, but I loved
to SNORE much more.

Thanks for jogging my inactive memory.

Re: Also ...

No clue about the smore invention date but there's an adult in every troop who gets banished to the farthest tent due to being the snoring champ!

Glad you enjoyed your jaunt!

Re: Also ...

Sounds familiar - I was forced to set up camp
on the opposite side of the river, which always put me in the next county!
