plumes from viewing area

Steam plumes created by lava flowing into the sea at the Kamokuna ocean entry as seen from the viewing area at the end of the walkable part of Chain of Craters Road. For many, this is close as they choose to get to the molten stuff. But you can get so much closer (2.5 miles closer) if you have the desire or time or stamina. You can hike out to the white barriers visible at far left. The large plume in the distance is not accessible from here (its base not visible from this side). You have to go to the Puna side to view that one. March 8, 2007.
