Took advantage of cooler weather to summit this one. Came up the Cienega Canyon Trail, and followed the previous summiters directions for avoiding the bushwhacking. It worked for the most part. The best thing was seeing a mule deer buck with a nice set of antlers near the top! I wish the summit views were better, but all in all, a fun little hike.

SwithichBushwhacking...via Cienega  Sucess!

We ascended from the saddle...bad idea. Climbed through thorns and the normal Sandia four foot scrab. The top was nice once we got there. On the descent we followed a small boulder rockfall down and avoided the bushes altogether. To avoid the bushes, travel from saddle north along the crest trail. Look for a rock field on your left at 0.3 or 0.4 miles. Meander your way up to the summit. You should be able to avoid the vast majority of the bushes. We avoided them completely on the way down. Happy hiking!

A nice trail run, capped with a short slog through annoying brush. 2 hrs., 2 min. up to the Crest Trail, then half an hour for the half-mile or so to the summit. Combined it with 9579 across the saddle.

A quick hike before work. Bushwhacking is not essential if you find the right path. I saw a turkey, and some awesome views.

Quick climb after work. Other hikers saw a bear nearby but he was not around while I was there.
