Pronghorn in Badlands NP

Pronghorn in Badlands NP

Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) in Badlands National Park, SD. These graceful animals are often called antelope, though they're not true antelopes. Being the fastest land animal in North American, and second fastest in the world, it's amazing to see them running at speed. An interesting little tidbit about them: They don't usually jump fences, preferring to crawl under them instead. So, many ranchers place chicken wire under the bottom strand of barbed wire to control the pronghorn. What one "traditionally" thinks of as the Badlands is just behind where we're standing. I took this July 2000 image of my son, Curtis, while he was snapping the inset image of the Pronghorn.

interesting perspective

Nice dramatic demonstration of what a zoom will do, also.
