north approach  Sucess!

A nice and easy climb.

A new very well paved road goes up to 1550m to a refuge just on the north side of psiloritis, starting form the village of Livadia. the road is very good and shorten the ascent.

From the refuge (Mygerou Lakkou), the way is very good ( with stones making the climb very easy up to +/- 2000m). You will join the E4 path at approx 2200m, but just before joining E4 path in bad weather be careful not to miss the right path.
Foggy and windy on the top, but still a nice hike.

In my view this way is the easiest and probably the fastest way to climb Psiloritis. Pilgrimage in september.

peak-bagging  Sucess!

Started from Nida and went past Koussakas and Vouloumenou on the way up and Angathias on the way down. Only one other person on the mountain (carrying a mountain bike). South coast clear, north coast covered in clouds and rain.

from Prinos hut  Sucess!

Beautiful hike on a gorgeous day up the southern slopes. The view from the top over the entire island is amazing.
The road to Prinos hut is by far the most demanding part of the "hike", at least for the drivers nerves.

Crete  Sucess!

Nice hiking trip with poor visibility. Despite the hot weather still found some snow not too far from the summit.
Could't find the beginning of the trail so I went my own way straight up on the scree :)

Route : From Stoubotos Prinos  Sucess!

Fani, Florence, Nike and I went up to the Stoubotos Prinos hut by car in the dirty road which starts from Kouroutes village. At 11h15 started climbing reaching the summit at 14h45. Nike prepared "Dakos" ( a nice greek entry based upon tomatoes, olive oil, oreganon and salt) in the shadow of the hut which crowns the summit. After some rest we went down reaching our car at 17h45, making 6h30 in total on a relatively relaxed pace. Weather was good though quite hot as normal in this time of the year. We crossed 4 other people and lots of goats.... Nice experience all in all on this mythical mountain where Zeus grew up .... thanks as well to our Cretan guides who facilitated the climb.

In 8 hours up and down from Fourfouras  Sucess!

Due to Greek culture we went off on a very, very late start.. The car rental lady showed up really late, and we had severe problems finding the trailhead (Greece and signs don't go together).

We had set our turn-around point at 6:30 in order to get down before dark, and since it didn't look like I was going to make it in time decided to climb the second highest summit in the range. My friend Christian was just a little faster that day and did manage to get to the real summit 50 meters higher and 15 more minutes. We got back to the saddle at exactly the same time and ran down the mountain, just making it out of the woods before it got dark (we would've gotten seriously lost then). Glad I didn't decide to take the extra 15 minutes to the true summit, it was that close... We had to do the last part of the mountain (wide gravel roads) by moonlight!

Didn't see a single person the entire day on the mountain. Temperatures were crazy, but luckily we spent the heat of the day in the forest section. We brought 3 liters of water each, which was all finished by the time we got to the summit.

I'll write a short trip report or something to help people find the trailhead in Fourfouras (if you don't see it anywhere, I've been too lazy to do it so far, don't hesitate to ask me (PM / email)).

EDIT: I've added some information to find the Fourfouras trailhead here.

Psiloritis  Sucess!

Started from Nida plateau at 4:40 at night. In the starting part of the trail I had big orientation problems, because at night it is almost impossible to find the right path because therea are many sheep paths. Later on no problem, from Kolani I went on the right ridge, crossed two other twothounsand meter high peacks. Last 20 minutes were very windy (around 50 miles per hour). In three hours I was on the top. Came back to car at 11 o clock and it was already very hot.

Route Climbed: Idean cave (East) Date Climbed: May 18th, 2005  Sucess!

My first real mountain ascent ever. Basically just a one day hike up there and very easy if the normal route is taken. I teamed up with two Norwegian semi-pro hikers but we missed the path in the beginning and had to scramble our way up to the highlands before finding the normal route.

Watch out for snow (even in May), extremely rare bearded vultures (Gypaetus barbatus), ladybugs and sheep up there. In clear weather you can see both north and south shores of Crete island from the summit.

Route Climbed: E4 trail Date Climbed: June 30, 2005  Sucess!

Although the trails are clearly marked, a walking map is recommended. Points where the trails intersect are not marked, and sometimes it's hard to discern between goat tracks and an unmarked trail.

Views from the top are nice, despite a brown haze, but there was a dismaying amount of garbage at the top. A shame.
