With Campbell Creek Peak  Sucess!

Came up from Grizzly Gulch, traversed over to Campbell Creek Peak and then down Campbell Creek. Originally hoped to also do Handies and Whitecross, but there was a lot of scattered rain in the area (some sprinkles as early as 8.30am!)so I decided to just head down.

Second time, Tour de Grizzly with Rachael. Went up the Grizzly Gulch trail but left early to go straight up the grass slopes to Whitecross, then traversed around over Handies and PT 13795 before descending back to the trial via a beautiful high tarn.

Turns a boring there-and-back 14er route into a nice ridge round  Sucess!

Occasional snow squalls, but fine spells as well. Up Handies via Grizzly Gulch, and then round. A little tricky coming off the NE side of the top of 13,795 -- very loose, slabby Cl 3 downclimb -- but an easy descent to the lake (13,323') via a nice gravelly slope just to the N of Pt 13,502'.

Black Tyne Peak from Handies  Sucess!

I traversed from Handies over to this Peak. A short downclimb of steep loose slaggy boulders gave me pause. The black pointy summit stands out in the distance. I dropped down to the divided Boulder Gulch and across. On the way I noticed a herd of deer around 13,000 feet. Relatively high altitude for deer. I was exhausted when approaching the cornice at the saddle of Handies. After failing to tunnel through I had to traverse to the right onto rock attain an easier cross from snow onto the ridge. My co-worker Austin Sadvar had waited at the saddle and said he thought he heard something below him where I tried to tunnel under neath his knap spot. We descended to Lake City for lunch and on to camp at Uncompaghre. Austin's first fourteener hooded him, but he is not yet willing to go out on the 13er limb..

2x via Boulder Gulch  Sucess!

11/3/07 - Boulder Gulch is a great way to access this peak and I highly recommend it. There is no trailhead marker at the bottom of Boulder Gulch but a fairly good trail climbs up this steep drainage. Also climbed Handies and "Campbell Creek Peak" on this hike. Wonderful fall day in the San Juans.

1/24/15 - Winter ascent via Boulder Gulch. Traversed ridge from Handies and descended S/SW slopes.

Re: Boulder Gulch

Agreed, Boulder Gulch looks like a great approach. We climbed Half Peak from Square Gulch and it looked gorgeous. Going from Handies was pretty long.

Climbed this with Asphazell after climbing Handies Peak. I must agree with my good friend Asphazell, a great day in the San Juans.
