Overview

Punta Calabre is the southest point of Val di Rhêmes. A long and easy hike from Thumel, and Benevolo Hut. For sure, better for ski-mountaineering, for a funny descent even in late spring. As for all icy minor peak of Val di Rhêmes, Punta Calabre is rather ignored from hikers. In summertime, alpin gear is required, because the Tsanteleynaz glacier has to be crossed to reach large summit. This glacier could be tricky! Pay due attention.

Getting There

Rhêmes Notre Dame route. Common begin: Introd village. Bus station for Rhêmes Notre Dame.
  • From Turin/Milan. Motorway A5, exit in Aosta Ovest. Follow Courmayeur direction, until reached Villeneuve. Follow for Val di Rhêmes direction.
  • From Switzerland, Martigny (Grand St. Bernard Tunnel/Pass). Drive to Aosta, then follow Courmayeur direction on SS.26. Once reached Villeneuve, turn for Val di Rhêmes.
  • From France (Mont Blanc Tunnel or Petit St. Bernard Pass). Do not enter in motorway A5, drive through SS.26 Aosta direction. Before arriving in Villeneuve, turn right for Val di Rhêmes direction. From Introd. Once passed the tiny village, after 2 km. turn right to Val di Rhêmes (or Rhêmes Notre Dame). Follow paved road until is possible. The road ends in Thumel, 1.879 m. No parking problem.

    Red Tape

Right hydrographic side of Val di Rhêmes, is inside Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso. The boundary of the park is exactly the Dora river. Right side is park, left side is outside. In PNGP are forbidden camping, dogs or other animals ... lot of restrictions. No parking fees or other tickets required. Punta Calabre is totally outside PNGP boundaries!

    When To Climb

Ski-mountaineering: from march/april, until june (...it depends on snow quality). Alpin-trek: from late June to late September

    Huts & shelters ...

Rifugio Benevolo, CAI Torino. Teleph. n. +39.0165.936143. 61 beds, 5 beds winter side. Usually open even in spring for ski-mountaineering in higher Val di Rhêmes. More crowded periods: Easter and August. Good also for Vaudala Peaks, Punta Basei, Granta Parei, Tsanteleynaz and Becca della Traversiere.

    Talk about Punta Calabre?

Need some vocal info on Punta Calabre? Would you like to laugh at my spoken English? Here is my Skype contact (Exception: when I'm in office I'm not able to answer, because I haven't the USB phone there ...). French supported only after three red wine glasses.
