East Ridge  Sucess!

Another one for the books with Haliku. Subtle cornices and snow on the summit ridge added some aesthetics to the climb. The views from the summit were very rewarding. Despite the cold temps and wind, it was another great outing.

Standard Route  Sucess!

Forgot my camera. Very overcast with a good amount of snow above 12k feet. Stayed at summit for about 2 minutes before heading down.

Post Thanksgiving hike  Sucess!

A good hike to burn off some pecan pie, beautiful winter day. There was some good hardpack that allowed for some nice glissading, speeding up my descent.

1st Winter Ascent!  Sucess!

It still amazes me the differences between climbing Quandary in June 2006 and November 2006 - 2 very different "mountains" with regard to conditions! I had the pleasure of hiking with fellow SPers Alan and Patrick on this winter ascent - complete with low temps, gusty winds, occasional whiteouts and sun - mostly wind and snow though! I was beat but enjoyed the experience!

First winter 14er summit  Sucess!

My first winter 14er summit. Damn was I tired! I remember Quandary being a walk in the park in July 2004. It's amazing what a ton of fresh snow with high winds will do to a mountain and your quads. Had the pleasure of climbing with fellow SPers Alan and Robert.

Better than I thought  Sucess!

Somehow, hike seemed easier than Bierstadt even with a hangover from the disc golf tourney (awards ceremony) in Vail the day before. Really enjoyed the creaking stones grinding together underfoot. Great day for it; sunny and cool.

Did the West Ridge...  Sucess!

and it was awesome! Nice class 3-4 route to the top, although some false summits and hard route finding make this trip a little more difficult than the average scramble.

Scary  Sucess!

Due to inexplicably poor decision-making, this was the scariest time in the outdoors that I've ever had. Hiking alone, I'd driven from Denver and didn't start until early afternoon. Descent featured nearly constant and very close lightning, rain, and marble-sized hail.

I knew I was starting too late but did it anyway--not like me at all. Haven't repeated such a stupid decision since. Climbed Democrat the next day, and Cameron, Lincoln and Bross two days later.

2nd attempt of day successful  Sucess!

I know its a sin but got a late start at the trailhead (10am). Made it to 500 feet of the summit before weather forced me down. After descending a 1000 feet to the end of the east ridge (to the timberline), weather cleared, turned around and summited and had the whole mountain to myself.

1st 14er  Sucess!

Climbed the East Ridge route. Pretty easy, a great first climb. Route was busy, but met some great people - beautiful views from the top!

A solo hike...sort of  Sucess!

My first solo 14er hike - although I was there with 500 of my closest friends. Summit was shrouded in clouds, so I didn't get to savour the view...have to go back to enjoy the view another time.

Memorial Day  Sucess!

An absolutely beautiful day. No clouds in the sky, not too hot, not too cold. Summitted in 2 hours with big brother. He's a 44 year old who kicks my butt.

South Face (east of Cristo Couloir)  Sucess!

Tried an alternative approach to summit along the south face from just east of the lake dam. No existing route so finding the way was a little difficult. We had to tunnel through some shrubs along the lower portion of the climb, and on the upper portions of the mountain the loose rock was pretty treacherous. Fun climb despite having to walk all the way around the mountain on the descent.

East Ridge

It was very crowded on the east ridge. We ascended into the clouds and has almost no view from the summit. This was my brother's first 14er. Pretty easy, but still very fun.
